Course description

Starting on Thursday June 6th, we are offering an exciting new course, Elements of Fiction, which covers everything you need to know about writing fiction, as well as giving you the chance to see your work in print. This twelve-week course is designed for new and aspiring writers seeking inspiration and guidance on writing fiction. The course will provide writing exercises and advice on techniques and look at the different elements involved in creating stories.

Throughout the course we will build the layers of a story, so by the end, writers will have a framework for their own writing project and also the opportunity to see their work in print in The Ocean, a new literary magazine. All students who attend this course will spend the first 8 weeks learning and practicing the key elements for fiction writing, and weeks 9 – 12 will focus on a particular piece of work, using editing skills and peer review to write a final piece ready for guaranteed publication in The Ocean.
Please see a breakdown of each week below.

Week One – Introduction and Descriptive Writing

Week Two – Use of the senses and imagery

Week Three – Language devices – similes and metaphors

Week Four – Character

Week Five – Setting

Week Six – Plot and narrative
