In four modules, you will receive lectures by email, with tips and suggestions, and you will be given an exercise with each module, ending in the writing of an article. Along the way you will receive tips on how to organise your day, and how to maximise your income.

Start date: on demand.

Duration: 4 modules over 8 weeks.

Tutor: Sue Leonard.

Sue Leonard has made a living out of freelance journalism for over fifteen years, dealing with up to twenty editors a year. Module 1: Sourcing Ideas for Articles.

Ideas come from everywhere. This module explains how to spot a good idea; how to develop it, and pitch it to the appropriate publication.  It will also cover dealing with editors.

Module 2: How to Research.

How to access information; who to talk to; and how to keep your research relevant to the feature. This module will also cover the importance of networking to gain more contacts, and the short phone interview.

Module 3: How to Interview.

Setting up an interview, being prepared, avoiding the pitfalls, and writing it up afterwards.

Module 4: Structuring and Writing a Feature Article.

All writing tells a story, but there’s a specific craft in feature writing. This module will emphasise the importance of clarity, accuracy, readability, writing to length, and meeting deadlines.
