After the fun I had answering questions for Derek’s Music & Me section of this site, I thought I’d offer a music-based prompt that might help stir up an idea for a poem or short story.

Think of a song that triggers a specific memory – an event, a time in your life, a specific emotion. What do you think about every time you hear this song? Copy out the song lyrics that have the most impact, and then write the part of your story connected to those lyrics.

Use those song lyrics to structure your memories into a piece of flash fiction, story or poem – make the piece as long as the music & memory allows. Play the song in the background as you write to make your writing more authentic.

You can post your writing, your ideas or snippets of your writing below – happy writing!
