I came across this competition and thought it would be perfect for followers of this blog so I asked the organisers a few quick questions so as we could get the skinny on it straight away. Here we go:

What is Carried in Waves?
It’s a short story competition for radio with a prize fund as follows:
1ST PRIZE €300 | 2ND PRIZE €200 | 3RD PRIZE €100

Who can enter and what are you looking for? 
The competition is open to original short stories in the English language of 3,000 words or less. These stories can be on any subject, in any style, by a writer of any age and of any nationality, living anywhere in the world. The themes explored may be of any nature but keep in mind that a shortlist of forty stories will be recorded for broadcast. By way of guidance the recordings of the shortlisted stories will be performed by one actor who will be chosen from a panel of six which will represent all voices and ages. All copyright and ownership remains the property of the writer.

How can I enter? 
Entries can be sent to carriedinwaves@ucc.ie

The entrants name and contact details must be included in the body of the email or at the top of the word attachment.
(Name, Email, Address and Phone Number)

Is there a fee to enter? 
The entry fee for one story is €10

What exactly are you asking of entrants? 

  • The order number you will receive once payment is processed must be in the subject line of the email. The order number looks like #100001234
  • The story should be cut and pasted into the email or attached as a word document. One email per entry.
  • If you wish you may enter a maximum of two additional stories for a fee of five euro each. The link is here to make the payment for the additional stories. http://uccshop.ie/carried-in-waves-additional-story-fee.html
  • In the subject line of the email for the additional entries you must reference the first order number as well as the order number for your subsequent entry.
  • Remember one email per entry.
  • Email acknowledgement will be by return email.

So how will the judging be completed? 
The adjudicating of the submissions will be by a panel of five people drawn from across all relevant disciplines. The panel will be chaired by Dr. Jools Gilson. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Age will not be a consideration in the adjudicating of the
competition.

When will we find out the shortlist and the winners? 
We will notify all entrants of the shortlist by email on the 29th of October and the shortlist will be published on the 30th of October.
The winners will be contacted in early December and announced on the 11th of December to the public.

How long before the closing date?

The closing date is 30th September 2015.

Do we need to give you permission to broadcast our stories? 
Entry to the competition is taken as acceptance of permission to broadcast. Stories must be previously unpublished.

Are there any special categories for young people/emerging writers? 

The George Boole special category exploring themes such as history, science, technology, entrepreneurism and digital thinking  is open to young adults who are submitting original short stories in the English language of 3,000 words or less. This special category is aimed at young adults which would be 25 years and younger.
The special category winner would be broadcast on George Boole Day which falls on 2nd November.

What are the prizes for this category? 
There is a first prize only of €200.
