Inverse is an exciting project for LGBT young people, kicking off on the 11 April 2015 at the Big Smoke Writing Factory. The project will feature an innovative programme of creative writing workshops, performance activities, an LGBT walking tour, and talks by high-profile guest LGBT writers.

Following on from a pilot project in 2013, Inverse will – over a core six week programme – enable a group of LGBT young people to create original pieces of creative writing, which they will have the opportunity to present in a public spoken word event as part of Dublin Pride in June, 2015.

Writing is a singularly powerful way to process difficult or new emotions, to communicate our sense of ourselves to the world and in so doing to make sense of who we are. Inverse will provide a fun, welcoming space in which participants will be encouraged to use creative writing to explore, challenge and express themselves.

The project will be led by writers Nathan O’Donnell, Nicole Rourke and Claire Hennessy. It will also feature talks by a range of other high-profile LGBT writers, including novelists Denis Kehoe and Brian Finnegan, and playwright Sonya Kelly, author of The Wheelchair on My Face, and this year’s runaway Fringe success, How to Keep an Alien. A tailored LGBT walking tour, led by the curator of the Irish Queer Archive, Tonie Walsh, will conclude the core six-week programme.

Inverse is an initiative which aims to provide young people, facing new and sometimes challenging realities, with the creative tools to negotiate them. It aims to generate positive narratives for LGBT young people, and to empower and strengthen LGBT identities.

Inverse is free for participants. This has been made possible by the kind support of Dublin City Council.
