Writing has always been more than just a profession to me—it’s a lifeline, a calling, a way to connect on a deeply personal level. This year marks my twenty-year authorversary and the launch of my brand new urban fantasy series, Merely Mortal. This book is my first published first-person POV story. I’ve poured my heart into creating an adventure that weaves together the threads of the supernatural and the everyday.
Beyond the book pages, my journey as a writer has been one of constant growth, discovery, and evolution. From a young age, I was drawn to storytelling. Books were my escape. I remember being captivated by the worlds created by authors like Anne Rice and Jane Austen, and dreaming of the day I could craft my own tales that would transport readers to new dimensions. Writing is my way of exploring the complexities of the human experience and delving into the emotional struggles that define us.
The journey to becoming a published author was not without its challenges. Like many writers, I faced doubt and frustration, but it was the unwavering support of my family and connections made with other writers that kept me going. Also, I have to thank the readers. Some of my favorite letters are the ones where readers tell me they discovered my work during a difficult time and my stories offered them a sense of escape and comfort. Those are always a powerful reminder of why I write. It reinforces the idea that stories have the power to heal, inspire, and bring people together.
Merely Mortal is a product of that belief. The book explores themes of identity, belonging, and the supernatural, all through the lens of Tamara, a mortal raised knowing about the mystical creatures hiding amongst us. Writing this book was an exercise in balancing the fantastical with the relatable, ensuring that readers could see parts of themselves in the characters and their journeys.

The writing craft is often romanticized, but in reality, it’s a lot of work. It involves late-night brainstorming sessions, countless revisions, and the occasional bout of writer’s block. There are days when the prose flows effortlessly and others when each letter is a chore. But it is an incredible privilege to be able to create and share my imagination with others.
Authors put pieces of ourselves out into the world, hoping it will resonate and touch lives in some meaningful way. Even though I’ve written hundreds of books, when Merely Mortal was released, I still experienced a blend of excitement and nerves. The feedback from readers has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s been a joy to see how Tamara’s journey has connected with so many people.
One of the most rewarding aspects of writing is the community it creates. Through book signings, social media, and reader events, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many passionate and dedicated fans. Their enthusiasm and support are what make the long hours and hard work worthwhile. Writing can be a lonely venture, but knowing there are readers eagerly awaiting my stories makes it all the more fulfilling.
In many ways, writing has transformed my life. It has given me a voice, a platform to explore my thoughts and ideas, and a means to connect with others on a deep level. It has taught me patience, perseverance, and the importance of staying true to my creative vision. Each story I write is a new opportunity to explore different facets of the human experience and to bring a little magic into the everyday.
As I work on the sequel to Merely Mortal called Mostly Shattered (Oct 2024), I am excited to see where Tamara’s journey will take us. Her world is vast and filled with endless possibilities, and I can’t wait to share more of it with my readers. Writing is not just what I do; it’s who I am. It’s a journey, and I am grateful for every moment.
Thank you for joining me on this adventure and for being a part of the worlds I create. Your support and encouragement mean the world to me, and I look forward to sharing many more tales with you in the years to come.

About Merely Mortal by Michelle M. Pillow:

A gripping new first-person POV urban fantasy romance series by NY Times and USA Today bestselling author, Michelle M. Pillow.
All I want is a simple, normal life.
Unfortunately, normalcy is a luxury I can’t afford as a lowly human born into a powerful supernatural family embroiled in magic. They’ve always been quick to remind me that I have an expiration date. Imagine everyone’s surprise when it’s me standing above their graves, not the other way around.
The fire that took their lives wasn’t my fault, yet everyone is blaming me, especially the vampires. Now I have a target on my back and a bounty on my head. Without the protection of my family, I’m caught up in a tangled web of supernatural dynasties and arcane power struggles.
So when a handsome stranger and his young daughter take pity on me and offer me a ride, I don’t say no. It’s a mistake. One I hope doesn’t cost us all our lives.
Sometimes, being merely mortal really sucks.
