Bio

Gabriela Cimpoca is a Romanian journalist based in County Clare, Ireland, since 2015. After moving in the country side, Gabriela and her husband embraced rural life as small-scale farmers, raising hens, growing vegetables, and tending to an apple orchard. She thinks that journalists are born, not made. Although no longer in a newsroom, she never stopped writing or observing the world around her. She runs a personal blog in Romanian language, where she shares her writing (essays, stories, and reflections) and she’s very active on social media. She collaborated with several Romanian-based and Ireland-based publications. For example her work has appeared in the collective short-story volume Diaspora 20, published by Itaca Dublin and she contributed to different literary projects.
Gabriela is a member of the Union of Professional Journalists of Romania since 1994.
Her motto is ”Carpe Diem” (Seize the day).

Children of Destiny. The life and death of Garda Raz, my son

2024 was a annus horribilis for our family, because of a tragedy that will follow us all our lives, a misfortune that was born in a few seconds and almost from nothing, but evolved and grew as big as a mountain.
On 26th October 2024 our child Razvan (Raz) and his girlfriend Jennifer (Jen) were coming to visit us. On the way to Co. Clare they had what should have been a minor road accident. And for sure everything would have ended here, if from the opposite direction a bus hadn’t come and hit the car right on the passenger seat side where Jen was sitting. After the brutal impact, she was rushed to the CUH. Unfortunately, on November 15, after 20 days in the hospital she passed. A month and five days later, at the end of the most terrible and devastating period of his life, without any hope that he would get better but with the conviction that he would get worse, Raz decided that he could no longer continue to live without Jen and on December 20, 2024, he ended his own life.
It may seem strange to you, I’m sure, but one of the few reasons that kept me from going crazy was the thought that I had to do something for Jen and Raz as a sign of respect and a homage to two fabulous young people who had their whole lives ahead of them, two children just like any parent would want to have. And… that’s how I ended up writing a book about the story of their life and death. A book that was born from an immense love, as only a mother can feel, from despair, regrets, fears, helplessness, non-acceptance, anger. From all amalgam of feelings and experiences that tested me throughout this period.
The volume “Children of Destiny. The Life and Death of My Son, Garda Raz”, was printed in two versions, English and Romanian. Both versions can be purchased online at https:gabriela-cimpoca.sumupstore.com
Thank you all for your attention, stay safe, be happy, enjoy life!
