Jacintha Mullins

Location: Limerick

Jacintha Mullins studied Fine Art at the Limerick school of art and design after which she went on to complete a master of arts in Interactive Media at the University of Limerick. She then qualified as a primary school teacher and is currently teaching at the Mid-West School for the Deaf in Limerick. After losing two pupils from the school community, she sought to provide a visual and child-friendly way of explaining what had happened to give comfort and hope to the pupils in her school. This was where her first children’s picture book Starchaser began. Starchaser is published by Veritas. It is currently available in all Veritas bookshops as well as through their website https://www.veritasbooksonline.com/. Starchaser is also available at O Mahony’s bookshop in Limerick. https://www.omahonys.ie/

The Starchaser comes from a magical place at the other side of the sky called the Big Beyond. She travels in the trails of the night’s falling stars to reach earth. Leaving earth is not easy for those who have to go or those who are left behind but the Starchaser has a few tricks up her sleeve to help us with all that. Starchaser is a children’s picture book which aims to support children who are experiencing grief whether it be from the loss of a pet, a parent, a grandparent or friend.

‘Starchaser’s travels through the sky offer a child a sense of being held by something greater and bigger than their loss. The book gently concludes that life goes on, and their loved ones will live on in their memories. This is a beautiful book which is sure to provide comfort and hope to children who have experienced bereavement. It is a wonderful resource for teachers, therapists and families to help children navigate their unique and individual grief journey.’
