About this Organisation

Writing workshops offered to writers of fiction by Niall Williams -- Irish novelist, screenwriter, and playwright. Niall, is the author of nine novels, one novella, three stage plays, and several screenplays. His last novel, HISTORY OF THE RAIN, was longlisted for 2014 Man Booker Prize. His new novel, THIS IS HAPPINESS, is being published by Bloomsbury in the UK/Ireland in September 2019.
Niall has taught many workshops and mentored MFA students in creative writing. He enjoys working with writers. The workshops, which are only offered occasionally, are run with his wife, Christine Breen, also a novelist. Their home, a 200-year-old cottage in west Clare, is the location.

"As soon as I read Four Letters of Love I decided I wanted to work with Niall: I love the poetry of his language as well as his wise and compassionate ability to let the hearts of his characters live. But most of all, I felt that here was a writer whose imagination could show me my own. It was a wise choice. Niall’s enthusiasm for the art of written storytelling is hugely contagious; his skill as a teacher is second to none. How wonderful to have a master writer’s view of how other master writers (e.g: Tolstoy, Hemingway, Marilynne Robinson,) develop character, write description and dialogue. These examples formed the basis of many of our own writing exercises, with the added bonus of in-depth one to one tutorials. I hadn’t counted on how delightful, meticulously planned and inspiring his workshops would be. Niall has an extraordinary ability to create an inspiring yet safe group environment, both supporting and challenging each one of us to become better writers. I had arrived feeling stuck in my writing. I loved every minute of the workshop, gaining more confidence in my own imagination and recovering my love of stories that was drummed out of me at university. What’s more, I returned home with more confidence and direction in my writing, for the first time thinking ‘I can do this!’ Don’t miss a chance to work with Niall. I can’t thank him enough." -- Kate Firth
