Against the grain, against the flow,

It seems to be my want to go.

Surprised, I see alongside me

Many more -and then those that line the shore.

As I strain & sometimes flounder I see those fighting and I wonder-

How that they have strength to swim,

and never consider giving in.

Shore wavers are a strange lot,

some test the waters, some care not.

Some throw stones, poke with sticks,

Faces dark, and sneers slick.

Others find a place to slide

Into the streams and by my side.

And nervously we paddle on,

To the tune of our own song
