Home to Cavendish: Beginning to feel like a real book! by Antoinette Tyrrell
It’s been some time since I’ve blogged. In online advice on how to blog successfully, the golden rule is that you must do it regularly. If this is the case, then it appears I’m failing miserably! In my defence, I do have a good excuse.
I went on holidays in mid-October – that’s not the excuse – I’m getting to that! I spent a glorious week in the Turkish sunshine working on my second novel. I had set myself a target of getting to the half-way mark in the first draft and that’s exactly what I did. I savoured the luxury of getting up each morning, enjoying a leisurely breakfast overlooking the Mediterranean, then spending the rest of the day writing furiously. If that’s how life as a full-time writer is, then sign me up!
I was only home a few days when my editor contacted me to say she was sending on the first round of edits for Home to Cavendish and I needed to start working on them. That’s my excuse for not blogging. When I haven’t been at work, I’ve been editing every minute of every day. As this is my first time to go through this process, it was daunting at first. Thankfully, there weren’t any major changes to the story. I needed to move around some chapters and add and omit bits, here and there, to ensure continuity. That said, the manuscript is over one hundred thousand words long, so it took quite some time.
In the writing world admitting that you enjoy editing is sacrilege. The consensus is that most writers don’t. For some reason I did. It must be due to all those years of editing documents and press releases at work. Daunted as I was, I discovered that once I adopted a methodical approach, I found my stride.
Tonight, I hit send on the last round of edits. There’s still some work to do before Home to Cavendish is publication ready but now phrases like ‘getting it to the typesetter’ are being mentioned along with requests for dedications and acknowledgements. Suddenly, it’s starting to feel like a real book!
Home to Cavendish, Antoinette’s debut novel will be published by Poolbeg in February 2019. For Home to Cavendish updates log onto www.antoinettetyrrell.ie
