In the Still of a Calm Grey Evening

In the still of a calm grey evening

As I lean across the long boards of my backyard’s fence

And stare across the kelly green fields to white Wicklow mountains

I am afforded time to dream and think and dream

I think of all the pain I’ve seen

And release it like leaves floating down an Irish stream

To end up where

I do not know and it would hurt to care

So let them swirl and twirl like houses in a rushing flood

As spring is here with hope in each new blushing bud
