My first year as an emerging writer member of writing.ie is nearly up. When I signed up, I wondered whether I was doing the right thing. The voices of my ancestors ringing in my ears,
“It’s far from writing.ie you were reared…” etc.
Now I know as writers we should stay away from clichés. In fact we should stay away from them til the cows come home! But it really is true to say that if you’d told me I’d be publishing a book within a year, I would indeed have nodded at you with condescension and then called the nurse to check your meds.
I had no notion of publishing. It started with me calling myself a writer. I don’t mean the ‘fake it til you make it’ thing (and yes there goes another cliché but hey… the more the merrier :D). I took the advice of the Jeff Goins’ book and started acting like one. I took it seriously and didn’t stop writing. I just wanted to get the stories out of me and on to the page; and while I wasn’t looking the book appeared.
On the 21st of this month I will be launching my first collection of short short stories The Long & The Short of it. It is a self-publishing project – but I am not doing it by myself. Far from it – I have joined forces with Emu Ink and I can’t tell you how amazing they have been in every way. They have worked with me and for me to make this the best book that it can be. I still feel I have so much to learn but I’m ready to unleash my stories on the world and see what happens.
I do believe I’m a short story teller at heart but am wrestling with a novel in the form of the madness of NaNoWriMo – so who knows when & what my next annoucement will be.
If you’re going to be in Tallaght on Nov 21st you’d be very welcome to come along to The Gallery, Tallaght Library at 7pm, where the wonderful Catherine Brophy will be launching the book for me. I’ll also be doing a Kildare launch in Kilcullen Library on December 6th.
Thanks to all the writers and readers who have encouraged me along the way.
If you’d like to get hold of a copy of The Long & The Short of it you can buy the ebook from Amazon and buy the paperback or rent the ebook from Emu Ink.
