It’s a good day for non-fiction this week, as nine out of the top ten Paperback Non-Fiction books find themselves in the Top 20, and, indeed, grabbing that coveted no. 1 spot with Mind Full: Unwreck Your Head, De-Stress Your Life by Dermot Whelan – something no doubt we could all use at the moment!

Elsewhere in the Top 20, those non-fiction big hitters include a new book from the popular Vex King, Healing is the New High at no. 16 and Working Hard, Hardly Working by Grace Beverley which again seems like an excellent plan if you can do it. In Fiction news, the new Harlan Coben, Win, has gone down to no. 20 and new in at no. 3 is Other Women by the ever-popular Cathy Kelly. For children, a brand new entry at no. 7 in the Children’s Top 10 is You’ve Got This: Learn to love yourself and truly shine -in your teens by Tammy Darcy – a great message in an age where children are perhaps under greater mental health pressures than ever before.

This week’s featured book is another non-fiction star. The Science of Happiness: The six principles of a happy life and the seven strategies for achieving it by Brendan Kelly is at no. 4 in Hardback Non-Fiction. We’ll be looking out for this to rise over the next few weeks – we could all use a little more happiness! Here’s the blurb:

The Science of Happiness is a relatively new area of scientific research and in this timely book, leading psychiatrist Professor Brendan Kelly sifts through the most up-to-date findings to arrive at a comprehensive set of principles and strategies that are scientifically proven to increase happiness levels.

Firstly, Professor Kelly examines the global research that reveals current trends in happiness: for example, those with right-wing political views are happier than those on the left; having a baby increases your happiness levels for two years; 47 is the age of greatest unhappiness; and Finland is the happiest country.

He then explains the six over-arching principles of a happy life and seven strategies for achieving it – without having to switch political allegiance or move to Finland. Although happiness cannot be purposely built, we can create the circumstances in which happiness is more likely to flourish and so increase our well-being. To this end, the various strategies outlined in this book combine research evidence with scientific, psychological and even spiritual advice in order to chart a happier path through our complex world.

‘Brendan Kelly does a superb job at tackling that most bedevilling of things – happiness. One thing is for sure, reading this book will bring happiness a step closer in your life!’ Professor Luke O’Neill

And now the charts, our own little bit of happiness here at writing.ie!
