You can tell it’s getting closer to Christmas – the nights are drawing in faster than Rudolph pulling a sleigh, fairy lights are appearing with increasing frequency, and the sales figures on the Bestseller list are climbing rapidly. Almost every one of the Top 20 clocked over a thousand sales this week, which is pretty good going when so many shops are closed; remember to check and see if your local bookshop is doing online sales!

The Top 20 is particularly interesting this week, as we’ve an unusually large number of Children’s books featuring. Code Name Bananas by David Walliams is, of course, right up there at no. 3, but we’ve also got the latest Wimpy Kid, The Ickabog by J. K. Rowling, and The Beano Annual just missed out. For older readers you’ve also got The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy, and of course The Guinness World Records 2021 is right up there at no. 9, and that’s been on every ten-year-olds wish list since day one, surely?

In adult books, Barack Obama is this week’s big story as his memoir A Promised Land hits shelves and the charts at no. 2, but can’t quite overtake Old Ireland in Colour; after all, there’s no place like home. And on that note, it’s lovely to see in the charts That Place We Call Home: A journey through the placenames of Ireland by John Creedon at no. 16 (no. 9 in Hardback Non-Fiction) as well as An Post book award winners such as Break the Mould by Sinéad Burke, and our featured book this week at no. 20, Thirty-Two Words for Field: Lost words of the Irish landscape. Here’s the blurb:

The Irish language has thirty-two words for field. Among them are:

Geamhar – a field of corn-grass

Tuar – a field for cattle at night

Réidhleán – a field for games or dancing

Cathairín – a field with a fairy-dwelling in it

The richness of a language closely tied to the natural landscape offered our ancestors a more magical way of seeing the world. Before we cast old words aside, let us consider the sublime beauty and profound oddness of the ancient tongue that has been spoken on this island for almost 3,000 years.

In Thirty-Two Words for Field, Manchán Magan meditates on these words – and the nuances of a way of life that is disappearing with them.

And now this week’s charts.
