The Top 20 this week is taking things slowly – no new releases, and not much movement. The biggest star, of course, is David Walliams’ new book, Fing, which has taken the top spot almost 1500 sales ahead of second place, as well as being no. 1 in the Children’s Top 10. This keeps the Children’s chart dominated by the usual suspects: Walliams (3 books), Rowling (2), Kinney (2) and Pilkey (2).

We can also see thrillers having a good run at the moment in the Fiction charts. Recent releases include The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley, A Noise Downstairs by Linwood Barclay, and Say You’re Sorry by Karen Rose.

A big sub-genre this week is the behind-the-scenes-of-healthcare; in the Top 20, we’ve got This is Going to Hurt: Secrets of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay, which has been a fairly constant feature in the charts since its publication almost a year ago. We’ve also got two titles side by side in the Top 10 Hardback Non-Fiction: Seven Signs of Life by Aoife Abbey which takes us into the intensive care unit; and this week’s featured book, Can Medicine Be Cured? by Seamus O’Mahony. Here’s the blurb:

A fierce, honest, elegant and often hilarious debunking of the great fallacies that drive modern medicine.

‘A deeply fascinating and rousing book’ Mail on Sunday.

‘What makes this book a delightful, if unsettling read, is not just O’Mahony’s scholarly and witty prose, but also his brutal honesty’ The Times.

Seamus O’Mahony writes about the illusion of progress, the notion that more and more diseases can be ‘conquered’ ad infinitum. He punctures the idiocy of consumerism, the idea that healthcare can be endlessly adapted to the wishes of individuals.

He excoriates the claims of Big Science, the spending of vast sums on research follies like the Human Genome Project. And he highlights one of the most dangerous errors of industrialized medicine: an over-reliance on metrics, and a neglect of things that can’t easily be measured, like compassion.

And here are this week’s charts, with the Top 20 followed by the Top 10 in each category:
