Welcome to this week’s charts, in our all-new, sparkly redesigned writing.ie! Have a click around the various sections, we’re very proud of our new look.

Ahem..back to this week’s bestsellers. We continue without Nielsen bookseller data, so we can’t give you the figures; this week’s top spot has been nabbed by Delia Owens’ Where the Crawdads Sing. This has been a fairly constant presence in the charts one way or another since its publication way back in December, but it’s proven to be a firm favourite with readers and critics and is now rewarded with that coveted no. 1.

Elsewhere, things continue very much as normal. David Walliams takes the top five slots in the Children’s Top 10 along with no. 9; Pinch of Nom and Mrs Hinch are dominating the Hardback Non-Fiction (good to see everyone is eating healthily and keeping things clean during lockdown!) and Normal People by Sally Rooney is having a bit of a come-back, no doubt helped along by the screen adaption airing this week.

This week’s featured book is one of the most recent releases in this week’s bestsellers, taking both no. 4 and no. 7 in the Top 10 Original Fiction and no. 13 in the Top 20. Exciting Times is the debut novel of author Naoise Dolan and has some amazing reviews from big names like Hilary Mantel and Nathan Filer. Here’s the blurb:

‘Droll, shrewd and unafraid – a winning debut’ Hilary Mantel, author of Wolf Hall
‘Fiercely intelligent, brutally funny’ Nathan Filer, author of The Shock of the Fall
Witty, compelling and with a razor-sharp social commentary. I guzzled it’ Pandora Sykes
Read if you like Animals by Emma Jane Unsworth, Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath’ Sunday Times
More than lives up to the hype … Likely to fill the Sally-Rooney-shaped hole in many readers lives’ Irish Times
One of the observer‘s 10 best debut novelists of 2020
Naoise Dolan explodes onto the scene with Exciting Times, a slyly humorous and scorchingly smart modern love story about three cynics in Hong Kong

When you leave Ireland aged 22 to spend your parents’ money, it’s called a gap year. When Ava leaves Ireland aged 22 to make her own money, she’s not sure what to call it, but it involves:

– a badly-paid job in Hong Kong, teaching English grammar to rich children;
– Julian, who likes to spend money on Ava and lets her move into his guest room;
– Edith, who Ava meets while Julian is out of town and actually listens to her when she talks;
– money, love, cynicism, unspoken feelings and unlikely connections.

Exciting times ensue.

And here are the charts, looking very swanky! The Top 20, followed as always by the Top 10 in each category.
