The nights are drawing in, tinsel is taking over supermarkets, and lots of new releases are hitting the shelves…Christmas is coming, and fast!

There are lots of new, recent or even upcoming releases to talk about this week. Anna Burns continues to dominate following her Man Booker Prize win for Milkman, with a fantastic total of over three thousand sales this week, but there are good sales figures for many of the top 20 with the top seven books all surpassing one thousand sales. These figures will probably go up a good bit over the next few weeks and it’s always interesting to compare book sales figures at this time of year every January. Other new entries to the Top 20 include At All Costs by Davy Fitzgerald and Vincent Hogan, at no. 5 in the overall chart and at the top of Hardback Non-fiction; In Pieces by Sally Field—this was actually released in September but has been a slow burner—which joins Michael Caine’s new book Blowing the Bloody Doors Off: And Other Lessons in Life in the celebrity non-fiction race, always a popular choice for christmas gifts. In Fiction, we have Tombland, the latest historical thriller from C. J. Sansom, which made it to no. 8 in Original Fiction but sadly missed out on the overall Top 20.

The Children’s chart is an interesting one this week; there is only one title each from Rowling and Walliams, despite both having upcoming releases and both being traditionally popular at Christmas. Walliams in particular usually sees a big surge in older titles around the time of a new release, and yet despite the fact that his brand new Ice Monster is due out any day now, we’re only seeing The World’s Worst Children 3 in the charts, and only at no. 7 in the Children’s Top 10. It will be interesting to see how those stats change in the next couple of weeks. Rowling is faring little better, with only Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in at the bottom of the Children’s Top 10; again, we’d expect that to change fairly rapidly with the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald about to hit the cinemas at the same time as the release of the screenplay. For now, though, the children’s chart is nicely varied with a range of ages and authors, even with those long-running series such as Dog Man, Tom Gates (15!) and Dork Diaries. These series are continuing to prove a popular way to get children of various abilities reading.

This week’s featured book was officially not even out at the time these charts were compiled but Cecilia Ahern’s consistent popularity has ensured that she hits the charts even before release! Roar has come straight into the charts at no. 15 overall and no. 4 in the Original Fiction charts, despite being a change from her usual novel format to short stories (short stories are arguably on the rise, perhaps a reaction to a shorter attention span in the age of social media? Discuss!). Here’s more information:

Have you ever imagined a different life?

Have you ever stood at a crossroads, undecided? Have you ever had a moment when you wanted to roar?

From much-loved, international bestseller Cecelia Ahern come stories for all of us: the women who befriend us, the women who encourage us, the women who make us brave. From The Woman Who Slowly Disappeared to The Woman Who Returned and Exchanged her Husband, discover thirty touching, often hilarious, stories and meet thirty very different women. Each discovers her strength; each realizes she holds the power to make a change.

Witty, tender, surprising, these keenly observed tales speak to us all, and capture the moment when we all want to roar.

‘These stories sing and cry and shout and whisper from the page. They’re sharp, clever, witty…a joy to read.’
Donal Ryan, international bestselling author of The Spinning Heart

And now on to the charts themselves. As ever, we start with the Top 20 overall and wrap things up (yes, the Christmas puns will be coming thick and fast now!) with the Top 10 in each category:
