My Name is Bridget: The Untold Story of Bridget Dolan and the Tuam Mother and Baby Home

Well, things are definitely returning back to normal in the Children’s Top 10, as we have two Harry Potter titles (the first two, as a matter of interest; is this a new generation of readers discovering the books for the first time?), two Wimpy Kids, and five (count ’em) David Walliams. That probably won’t change that much for a while, particularly given the newest Walliams on the radar, The World’s Worst Children 3. However, it is very good to see that beating all of the big hitters at the top of that chart is Love Simon: Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda which really seems to be striking a chord and proving again that YA books really aren’t afraid of tackling big issues.

Over in the Top 20, it’s nice to see a broad range of genres, with each of the Top 10s (except Children’s) being pretty well represented. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine continues to be a runaway hit and if you still haven’t read that, you’d seem to be in the minority. Eleanor Oliphant is only slightly behind Liz Nugent; it’s also good to see plenty of women in that Top 20 – well over half, in fact.

Our featured book this week is a relatively new release, currently at number 3 in Paperback Non-Fiction and number 13 in the Top 20: My Name is Bridget: The Untold Story of Bridget Dolan and the Tuam Mother and Baby Home by Alison O’Reilly. Here’s a bit more about the book:

In 1946, twenty-six-year-old Bridget Dolan walked up the path to the front door of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home. Alone and pregnant, she was following in the footsteps of more than a century’s worth of lost souls. Shunned by society for her sins and offered no comfort for her pain, Bridget gave birth to a boy, John, who died at the home in a horrendous state of neglect less than two years later. Her second child was once again delivered into the care of the nuns and was taken from her, never to be seen or heard from again.

She would go on to marry a wonderful man and have a daughter, Anna Corrigan, but it was only after Bridget’s death that Anna discovered she had two brothers her mother had never spoken about. In the aftermath of the explosive revelations that the remains of 796 babies had been found in a septic tank on the site of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home, she became compelled to try and find out if her baby brothers’ remains were among them.

Here, Anna and Alison O’Reilly piece together the erased chapter of the life of Bridget Dolan and her forgotten sons, reminding us that we must never forget what was done to the women and children of the Tuam Mother and Baby Home.

And now finishing up another week with the charts. Here’s the Top 20, followed by the Top 10 in each category.
