This week’s charts are brought to you under increasingly difficult conditions for everyone involved in the book chain, and the charts are a sad reflection of this.

Even at no. 1—still The Daly Dish, by Gina and Karol Daly—sales have plummeted this week due to the widespread closure of bookshops and have gone from 6.4k last week to just 1.7k this week, and for the first time, sales in the Top 10 in each category are below three figures, with some books only managing 77 sales – and these are the bestsellers, remember.

Book choices are also reflecting the changing times. In the Children’s Top 10, the top seller was Family Fun Unplugged by Peter Cosgrove, presumably from families wanting ideas to keep children entertained in lockdown, beating superstars like David Walliams and Jeff Kinney; while another book appearing in the Children’s chart is Writing Workbook Ages 3-5: New Edition: Ideal for Home Education, which is fairly self-explanatory. Elsewhere, inspiration and hope are popular choices too, with Charlie Mackesy’s The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse all the way up at no. 6, there’s WE Summit Together 2020 by Donna Kennedy at no. 6. in Paperback Non-Fiction, and this week’s featured book, whose strapline is something we all need: “the power of human resilience.” Here’s the blurb:

A modern travel tale—part personal pilgrimage, part political quest—that captures the power of human resilience

“McKiernan sticks his thumb out, and somehow a healthy dose of humanity manages to roll up alongside him. . . . This book is a paean to nuance, decency and possibility.”Colum McCann, National Book Award winner and New York Times bestselling author of Let the Great World Spin and Apeirogon.

Following the collapse of Ireland’s Celtic Tiger economy, social activist Ruairí McKiernan questions whether he should join the mounting number of emigrants searching for greater opportunity elsewhere. McKiernan embarks on a hitchhiking odyssey with no money, no itinerary and no idea where he might end up each night. His mission: to give voice to those emerging from one of the most painful periods of economic and social turmoil in Ireland’s history. Engaging, provocative and sincere, Hitching for Hope is a testimony to the spirit of Ireland. It is an inspirational manifesto for hope and healing in troubled times.

And now for the last time for now, here are the Irish Bestsellers with the Top 20 followed by the Top 10 in each category. Stay home and stay safe, everyone.
