‘Tis the season for book sales figures to start rising, and sure enough, here we go. This week the top five books are all over a thousand; alongside that, this does make it harder to get into the Top 20, as what would ordinarily be a decent weekly sales figure doesn’t cut it for the next couple of months. That thousand-club will continue to grow week-on-week now, all being well – the biggest question is, who will be lucky enough to make it? This week, it includes firm favourites Heather Morris (Cilka’s Journey) and Sarah Breen & Emer McLysaght with Once, Twice, Three Times An Aisling; and evergreen Lee Child with his brand new release, Blue Moon (straight to the top at no. 3 just a couple of days before release).

At the other end of the charts, in the Children’s Top 10, we can start to see a little variation (not much, but a little) on the usual suspects. Yes, Rowling, Pilkey and Walliams are all there but we also have Gordon’s Game by Paul Howard and Gordon D’Arcy, the beautiful picture book Take Five from Niall Breslin, and The Great Irish Science Book by Luke O’Neill. As we get closer to Christmas, we will of course be knocked over by the new David Walliams, but we can maybe also expect to see a couple more non-fiction titles, which are often a popular choice for gifts.

This week’s featured book is also a member of the coveted thousand-club, smashing into top place on release – perhaps a sign of an increasing appetite for satire in turbulent times: Boulevard Wren and other stories by Blindboy Boatclub (try saying that three times quickly after a festive tipple). Here’s the blurb:

Boulevard Wren and Other Stories is the stunning follow-up to the bestselling Gospel According to Blindboy, and a warped mirror held up to the Irish psyche.

Provocative and unsettling, the stories rove through the centuries, from the barren fields of Famine-struck Meath to the chaotic landscape of the near future, where social media has colonised the deepest recesses of the human subconscious. This is a world populated by characters lost and at odds with the demands of contemporary life, for whom the line separating redemption and madness has grown impossibly fine.

Razor-sharp social satire, it is an era-defining work from one of Ireland’s most anarchic satirists and a quietly devastating portrait of a society in disarray.

‘Mad, wild, hysterical.’ Kevin Barry, author of Night Boat to Tangier

And now on to the charts, with the Top 20 followed by the Top 10 in each category:
