In this week’s charts, compiled just before Mother’s Day, it’s lovely to see Emma Hannigan’s book The Gift of Friends right at the top there. There’s also M For Mammy by Eleanor O’Reilly just peeping in the Top 20 and at no. 5 in the Original Fiction chart. Elsewhere things are much the same as previous weeks; the World Book Day titles continue to take up around half of the Top 20 and all but one of the Children’s Top 10 (that one, of course, being Fing by the perennial David Walliams).

A couple of new entries to the charts include the superpower that is Oprah Winfrey, with one of her previous books getting a new lease of life (What I Know For Sure) as a brand new release—The Path Made Clear—takes no. 8 in the Hardback Non-Fiction. Expect that one to stick around a fairly long time, even if it possibly doesn’t shoot to the top. We’ve also got Sinead Gleeson hitting both the Paperback and Hardback Non-Fiction charts (no. 7 and no. 3 respectively) with the same book, Constellations. This is even more impressive given that the book’s official release date isn’t until 4 April! Again, that’s probably going to be a long-running favourite.

Probably not as long-running, though, as The Tattooist of Auschwitz (Heather Morris) and Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine (Gail Honeyman), both of which are still in the Mass Market Fiction Top 10 (the former at no. 1 in fact), and the Tattooist back in the Top 20.

This week’s featured book is from a favourite author here at writing.ie; Christine Dwyer Hickey’s newest book The Narrow Land is at no. 10 in the Original Fiction chart. Here’s the blurb:

A brilliant portrait… With a beguiling grace and a deceptive simplicity, Christine Dwyer Hickey reminds us that the past is never far away – rather, it constantly surrounds us, suspends us, haunts us.” Colum McCann

1950: late summer season on Cape Cod. Michael, a ten-year-old boy, is spending the summer with Richie and his glamorous but troubled mother. Left to their own devices, the boys meet a couple living nearby – the artists Jo and Edward Hopper – and an unlikely friendship is forged.

She, volatile, passionate and often irrational, suffers bouts of obsessive sexual jealousy. He, withdrawn and unwell, depressed by his inability to work, becomes besotted by Richie’s frail and beautiful Aunt Katherine who has not long to live – an infatuation he shares with young Michael.

A novel of loneliness and regret, the legacy of World War II and the ever-changing concept of the American Dream.

And now on to the charts with the Top 20 followed as always by the Top 10 in each category:
