We’re kicking things off with the Children’s chart today, as Christmas gets closer and has a pretty big influence on the charts over the next few weeks. Bookending (boom boom) the overall Top 20 this week we have the return of Liz Pichon’s Tom Gates in book no. 15: What Monster? at no. 20 and everyone’s favourite Wimpy Kid at no. 1 with The Meltdown, which is the thirteenth book in the series by Jeff Kinney but certainly not an unlucky number, as it takes a massive 3653 sales in just a few days. Joining those two at the top of the Children’s top 10 we also have a lovely book for very young children about facing your fears, The Magic Moment by Niall Breslin. Finally, the first Christmas-themed book (if you exclude annuals) of 2018 is The First Christmas Jumper and the Sheep Who Changed Everything by Ryan Tubridy, which will no doubt be appearing in these charts for the next two months regularly! And one noticeable absence in the Children’s charts is David Walliams – it’s highly unusual to not see Walliams’ name there at a time when he has a brand new release out, besides being the run up to Christmas, but it doesn’t hurt to see some different names in there for our younger readers to enjoy.

It’s also a great time for non-fiction (always great gift fallbacks!). Notable new or recent releases include: Time to Talk: Stories from the Heart of Ireland by Michael Healy-Rae heading up Hardback Non-Fiction; And Life Lights Up by Alice Taylor, and Doctor on a Diet by Paula Gilvarry for anyone wanting to get into shape for the festive season (before being taunted by all those Christmas goodies!).

This week’s featured book has been around a couple of weeks, but there’s not getting away from him – Noel Fitzpatrick, the Supervet, is everywhere at the minute and his book is proving to be extremely popular with animal lovers across the UK and Ireland. Here’s the blurb:

A powerful, heart-warming and inspiring memoir from the UK’s most famous and beloved vet, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick – star of the Channel 4 series The Supervet.

Growing up on the family farm in Ballyfin, Ireland, Noel’s childhood was spent tending to the cattle and sheep, the hay and silage, the tractors and land, his beloved sheepdog Pirate providing solace from the bullies that plagued him at school. It was this bond with Pirate, and a fateful night spent desperately trying to save a newborn lamb, that inspired Noel to enter the world of veterinary science – and set him on the path to becoming The Supervet.

Now, in this long-awaited memoir, Noel recounts this often-surprising journey that sees him leaving behind a farm animal practice in rural Ireland to set up Fitzpatrick Referrals in Surrey, one of the most advanced small animal specialist centres in the world. We meet the animals that paved the way, from calving cows and corralling bullocks to talkative parrots and bionic cats and dogs.

Noel has listened to the many lessons that the animals in his care have taught him, and especially the times he has shared with his beloved Keira, the scruffy Border Terrier who has been by Noel’s side as he’s dealt with the unbelievable highs and crushing lows of his extraordinary career.

As heart-warming and life-affirming as the TV show with which he made his name, Listening to the Animals is a story of love, hope and compassion, and about rejoicing in the bond between humans and animals that makes us the very best we can be.

And now on to this week’s charts, with the Top 20 and finishing with the Top 10 in each category:
