Well, it is back to business as usual here in the Irish Bestseller lists, as we pack away the tree and dust off the remaining fragments of tinsel. And apparently, business as usual means that we see the return of Gail Honeyman’s Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine (no. 14) and Heather Morris’ The Tattooist of Auschwitz, which has gone straight back up to no. 1 in the Top 20! We’ve also got Oh My God What A Complete Aisling The Novel by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen, at no. 4, which was actually the no. 1 this time last year, so it really is a familiar figure.

Sales figures have taken the inevitable dive since Christmas spending has stopped; very comparable to last year’s figures though, no major downturn there which must be a bit of a relief though no doubt booksellers would have preferred a slightly different picture! What we can see, though, is that the sales at the bottom of that Top 20 are improved, another relief.

It’s clearly too early in the year for any 2019 releases just yet, but we do have a couple of latecomers slipping right in at the end of 2018. One of these is Calm the F**k Down by Sarah Knight, whose book The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving A F**k took off for its, erm, refreshing parallels with Marie Kondo’s phenomenon The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Knight’s new book may be a refreshing way for serial New-Years-Resolution-Failers to begin a new year? However, if that’s just too refreshing, you may like this week’s featured book, another release just slipping in at the end of the year.

The Power of Small by Aisling Curtin and Trish Leonard has gone straight into the charts at no. 10 in the Top 10 Paperback Non-Fiction, but it will probably be a long player. Here’s the blurb:

Feeling overwhelmed? This is the book for you.

‘At last! A book that shows you realistically how to transform your life, one small step at a time.’
Russ Harris, author of international bestseller The Happiness Trap

Rather than waiting for the big life-changing moments, which more often than not don’t happen, The Power of Small shows you how to take manageable steps as opportunities to change your life, one decision at a time — emphasising self-compassion as a means to gently expand your comfort zone and open up new horizons.

Mixing case studies from clinical practice with the latest psychological research, the authors also share personal stories, having worked first-hand with these techniques on their own journeys towards improved mental and emotional wellbeing.

From understanding — and learning to observe without judgement — the traps our minds set, to breaking our of our comfort zones, The Power of Small technique is all about what is manageable in the now, and teaches us how to prioritise and know what boundaries to keep, and which to gently push.

If your mind tells you that certain life changes are unattainable, undeserved, or too hot to handle, this simple and effective book is the one for you.

And here are the too-hot-to-handle charts, straight off the press, with the Top 20 followed by the Top 10 in each category:
