As the coronavirus Covid-19 hits Europe this week, our thoughts go out to all those affected by the illness, directly or indirectly. Major book fairs (such as the London Book Fair and Bologna Children’s Book Fair) have been cancelled or postponed, and it can be expected that the book industry will be hit in other ways as time goes on.

Returning to the charts for this week though, and World Book Day has had its usual mega-impact! Top of the charts is Dave Pilkey’s Dog Man with a massive 7000+ sales this week, and other World Book Day titles dominate the Top 20 and the Children’s Top 10 – so much so, that Hilary Mantel’s long-awaited Wolf Hall installment The Mirror and the Light only reaches no. 13 and no. 17 in the Top 20, with combined sales of well over 2000; a figure that would normally give Mantel a strong pole position.

This week’s featured book is one of the few non-World Book Day titles to be both released in the last few days and make it into the Top 20 – given the sales of WBD, this is quite an achievement! Patricia Scanlan’s The Liberation of Brigid Dunne was only released two days before the compilation of these charts but is no. 19 in the Top 20 and no. 5 in Original Fiction. Here’s the blurb:

One explosive family reunion. A lifetime of secrets revealed.

When four feisty women from the same family get together at a family reunion, anything can happen…

Marie-Claire, betrayed by her partner Marc, plans to teach him a lesson he will never forget. She travels home from Toronto to Ireland, to the house of the Four Winds, for her great-aunt Reverend Mother Brigid’s eightieth birthday celebrations. It will be a long-awaited reunion for three generations of family, bringing together her mother, Keelin, and grandmother, Imelda – who have never quite got along

And then all hell breaks loose.

Bitter, jealous Imelda makes a shocking revelation that forces them all to confront their pasts, admit mistakes, and face the truths that have shaped their lives. With four fierce, opinionated women in one family, will they ever be able to forgive the past and share a future?

And what of Marc?

It’s never too late to make amends…or is it?

Spanning generations and covering seismic shifts in the lives of women, The Liberation of Brigid Dunne is a compelling, thought-provoking, important and highly emotional novel from a trailblazing author in women’s fiction.
What readers are saying about Patricia Scanlan’s storytelling:
‘Utterly magical and wonderful … warmth and compassion shine through’ Marian Keyes
‘Like being enfolded in a hug from the great writer herself: warm, comforting and full of love’ Cathy Kelly
‘There can be little doubt that Patricia Scanlan is the prolific queen of contemporary Irish popular fiction’ Sunday Times
”There is a heartbreaking authenticity in her observations’ Irish Times
‘The ultimate comfort read’ Glamour

And now this week’s charts, with the Top 20 followed by the Top 10 in each category:
