This week seems to be about two things, mainly: celebrities, and new starts. Celebrities, because some of our favourite celebs are in the charts not once, but twice: Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club is still in the Top 20, and has TWO entries in this week’s Original Fiction Top Ten, with the hardback just edging ahead of the Paperback. And Graham Norton, whose books always stay in the Bestseller lists for months on end, has a re-appearance of A Keeper at no. 10 in Mass Market Fiction, and his most recent book, Home Stretch, is at no. 1 in Original Fiction and no. 11 in the Top 20.

However, it’s January, so the real news is about making a fresh start. The Top 10 Paperback Non-Fiction chart has you covered: there are three books on healthy eating (The Happy Health Plan by David and Stephen Flynn; Feel Great, Lose Weight by Dr Rangan Chatterjee; and The Daly Dish Diary by Gina and Karol Daly), two on positive changes in your life (Atomic Habits by James Clear topping this list, followed by Good Vibes, Good Life by Vex King), one for the money (How to be Good with Money by Eoin McGee) and a couple of diaries to keep you on track (The Irish Get Up and Go Diary 2021, and Oh My God What A Complete Diary 2021 by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen).

This week we are overjoyed to give a big shout out to writing.ie’s very own Sam Blake, whose latest book The Dark Room has gone straight into the charts at no. 6 in Original Fiction, only two days after release! Here’s hoping it builds on that awesome start.

And this week’s featured book is The Duke and I by Julia Quinn, the Regency romance that was the inspiration for the steamy, massive Netflix hit, Bridgerton, which went live over Christmas. It’s been knocked down to no. 10 in the Top 20 by all you healthy eaters out there, but it’s such fun we couldn’t resist showcasing it here this week. Here’s the blurb:

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER – The Duke and I

The
first novel in Julia Quinn’s worldwide bestselling Bridgerton novels, now a series created by Shonda Rhimes for Netflix. This is the story of Daphne Bridgerton and the Duke: welcome to the ballrooms of Regency London . . .

Can there be any greater challenge to London’s Ambitious Mamas than an unmarried duke? –Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers, April 1813

By all accounts, Simon Basset is on the verge of proposing to his best friend’s sister, the lovely – and almost-on-the-shelf – Daphne Bridgerton. But the two of them know the truth – it’s all an elaborate plan to keep Simon free from marriage-minded society mothers. And as for Daphne, surely she will attract some worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable . . .

Their ruse works like a charm – at first. But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, it’s hard to remember that their courtship is a complete sham. Maybe it’s his devilish smile, certainly it’s the way his eyes seem to burn every time he looks at her. It wasn’t the plan, but it seems she’s falling for the duke, for real. And amidst the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule . . .
