It’s been a strange week in the book world, with great excitement at the reveal of the An Post Irish Book Awards short listscheck out the short stories shortlisted for Short Story of the Year and vote for your favourite here – but the news that we’re all heading back into lockdown for six weeks and bookshops will be closing. HOWEVER, they are all online and the one thing we all need to get through the coming weeks is a bit of distraction – what better than the portable magic of a great book?

This week we’re featuring one of the most beautifully written crime novels available – John Banville’s Snow – ‘The body is in the library,’ Colonel Osborne said. ‘Come this way.’ Following the discovery of the body of a highly respected parish priest at Ballyglass House – the Co. Wexford family seat of the aristocratic, secretive Osborne family – Detective Inspector St. John Strafford is called in from Dublin to investigate. Strafford faces obstruction from all angles, but carries on determinedly in his pursuit of the murderer. However, as the snow continues to fall over this ever-expanding mystery, the people of Ballyglass are equally determined to keep their secrets.   Order your copy here.

It’s a must buy – I’m saving my copy for an undisturbed afternoon in front of the fire…Snow is at No 7 this week, and here’s the rest of the Top 20 with data supplied by Nielsen BookScan taken from the Irish Consumer Market week ending 17th October 2020
