The SoA’s Authors’ Foundation and K Blundell Trust are open for applications.
Each year the SoA awards over £370,000 in grants, supporting writers with works in progress – of fiction, non-fiction or poetry, and in a range of genres and styles – by buying time to write or helping with research costs.
The current applications window closes on 1 February, with grants distributed in May.
The next application round closes on 1 July, with grants distributed in October.
Authors must fufil the same criteria as the Authors’ Foundation and applicants must also satisfy the following conditions:
The author must be British by birth, ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, and under the age of 40 on the closing date for applications.
The author must submit a copy of their latest published book (debut authors are not eligible). Please submit this in digital form as an attachment to the email – we are not currently able to receive deliveries due to the COVID19 outbreak.
The work must ‘contribute to the greater understanding of existing social and economic organisations’. Fiction is not excluded.
Conditions of Entry
No author may apply to the Foundation twice in the same year.
Successful applicants must wait four years before reapplying to the Foundation. For example if you received funds in the Autumn round of 2020 you must wait until Spring of 2025 before reapplying.
Grants will not be awarded to cover publication costs (see details of these in our FAQs).
