In a significant pre-emptive deal, Puffin Editorial Director Ben Horslen has acquired World English language rights in The Borrowed Dark by Dave Rudden (Ed – woo hoo!!), from Clare Wallace at the Darley Anderson Literary Agency.
Translation rights have already been sold in Germany in a six-figure pre-empt by Fischer and in France to Pocket Jeunesse.
The Borrowed Dark is the first in an 11+ fantasy adventure trilogy about Denizen Hardwick, an orphan boy who finds himself caught up in an ancient and secret battle between an order of magic-wielding humans –the Knights of Borrowed Darkness – and a shadowy race of monsters known as the Tenebrous and their powerful master, the Endless King.
Horslen says, ‘I devoured The Borrowed Dark in one overnight sitting, held rapt and jumping at every shadow in my candlelit flat. The world Dave has created is brimming with imagination and dark magic. Fans of Rick Riordan, Eoin Colfer and Derek Landy are going to absolutely love it.’
Clare Wallace said, ‘We discovered Dave’s astonishing début amongst our children’s submissions and immediately knew we had found a rare talent. Puffin’s dynamic and passionate response to The Borrowed Dark made them the natural partner for his distinctive new voice.’
Dave Rudden is twenty-six years old and lives in Dublin. He has recently completed the Creative Writing Masters at UCD, earning a first class honours degree. His short stories and poetry have been published in such journals as Bare Hands, Wordlegs and the Quotable. He has been shortlisted for the Bath Short Story Prize 2013, longlisted for the Fish Poetry Prize 2013 and was the recipient of the Fantasy Book Review 2011 Short Story Prize. For those of you who visit writing.ie regularly, you’ll remember Dave Rudden’s articles on studying for a creative writing masters: Go Big or Go Home, and his interview with Professor James Ryan.
Dave told us, ‘I couldn’t have wished for a better publishing partner or a more enthusiastic reaction for my début novel. I am very excited about moving forward with Puffin and bringing the trilogy out into the world.’
The Borrowed Dark by Dave Rudden will be published by Puffin in Spring 2016 (and you’ll be hearing A LOT more about it here!)
