The Woman in Me by Britney Spears

The Woman in Me by Britney Jean Spears, known to most as just ‘Britney’, is the pop singer’s memoir and tells her story of her life growing up as a celebrity child in the making, discovering fame in her early teens. How she was on one hand forced to grow up too fast and on the other hand as a woman in her 30’s was dictated by her own father, a conservatorship and how her fans and the #FreeBritney movement finally helped free her.

It was first published in 2023 by Gallery Book, and imprint of Simon and Schuster Inc. 2023 in the United States and also first published in 2023 in Great Britain by Gallery Books, and imprint of Simon and Schuster Uk Ltd.

As a huge fan of Britney in my teens and my 20s this is a book I wanted to read straight off the bat.  I went to see her in concert in Dublin when I was about 21. I remember that concert didn’t get great reports as she wore a skin coloured outfit on stage at one point and looked naked.

Ironically the name of her book and her renowned song of the same title, The Woman in Me was and still is my favourite song.  It was in the film Crossroads. I’m 40 and still feel like I’m not a grown up.  But seriously, as a Mum of a 13-year-old girl, I look at my baby who thinks she is grown up and although she’s not, and she is my baby, she’s not a baby and caught in that place, “All I need is time, a moment that is mine, while I’m in between”.

The prologue at the back reads, (I read the Americanised written book)

“As a little girl I walked for hours alone in the silent woods behind my house in Louisiana, singing songs…Before going home, I would follow a path to our neighbours’ house, through a landscaped yard and past a swimming pool.  They had a rock garden full of small, soft pebbles that would trap the heat and stay warm in a way that felt so good against my skin.  I would lie down on those rocks and look up at the sky, feeling the warmth from below and above, thinking I can make my own way in life.  I can make my dreams come true.”

Like many celebs and the Late Princess Diana, Britney was hounded by the media constantly taking pictures of her, many not flattering and often not as sinister looking as the article that would accompany the said picture(s) in the papers and magazines.  And I like that she has no pictures in her memoir, as if to make a statement! We are all human, we all make mistakes but if people snapped us every time we picked our nose or had a bad day, how awful would life be?

Woman in Me by Britney SpearsAs I read the book, I highlighted certain passages that resonated with myself.  In chapter 21 she says about how when your child reaches an age that you were when something traumatic happened it can trigger it for the parents.  In chapter 24, “Giving a person no grace in a hard time is just not nice.”  In chapter 34, “…to hinder someone’s spirit…to the point where they no longer feel like themselves – I don’t think is healthy.”  In chapter 43 Britney goes back to when people tested the theory if someone was a witch or not by the sink or swim method, so basically you were damned either way.  The last chapter shows how much she has evolved as a person … “I’ve come to see what kind of people I want to be around, and what kind of people I don’t”.

A great read for anyone who was or is a fan of the pop princess.
