Twas The Nightshift Before Christmas by Adam Kay

By Grace O’Reilly

This was actually the first eBook that I have ever read, and I read it last Christmas.  Written by Adam Kay and was published by Pan Macmillan UK, 2019. Set in the UK, this book deals with the good, with the bad and with the different, working with the NHS.  (I’m sure it is a similar story for those working in the HSE, in Ireland, also).

The book is set in the gynaecology and labor wards, while Kay was working as a junior doctor.

Adam’s biographical diaries, Twas The Nightshift before Christmas is a mixed bag of memoirs.  Have the tissues handy as some of the sections will have you roaring with laughter with tears sliding down your cheeks, while other scenes will leave you heartbroken and crying with sympathy, empathy or both.

It also shows how as well as being an extremely rewarding job, working as doctors and nurses, can also be hard work with long hours.  While others are out celebrating the festive season, those working in the hospital are getting covered in bodily fluids from vomit to blood, whilst others are kissing under the mistletoe, bopping away to music and wearing Christmas jumpers and enjoying a few Christmas drinks.

No doubt though, last Christmas and this Christmas is and was a tougher time than usual for those working on the front line in any career, with Covid 19, restrictions and social distancing.

The blub at the back of the book reads,

“Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat…but 1.4 million NHS staff are heading off to work.  In this perfect present for anyone who has ever set foot in a hospital, Adam Kay delves back into his diaries for a hilarious, horrifying and sometimes heartbreaking peek behind the blue curtain.

TWAS THE NIGHTSHIFT BEFORE CHRISTMAS is a love letter to all those who spend their festive season on the front line, removing babies and baubles from the various places they get stuck, at the most wonderful time of the year.”
