Becoming a freelance writer sounds like the best job in the world. You get your writing assignment, write it, submit it and celebrate as the cash comes in… at least that’s what you think. To become a successful freelance writer, you need to put in a lot of time and effort in doing activities that enhance the quality of your craft.

Here are 10 dependable tips for freelance writers to achieve success. These tips highlight some important points that aspiring freelancers tend to miss out on. Follow these, and you’ll enjoy a more rewarding career.

  1. Keep a Blog

Blogs can act as portfolio of sorts that companies can view to get a better idea of who they are hiring and how good they are at their work. Sending PDF samples of work is slowly becoming obsolete and many companies are now searching for good writers via blogs. You can also improve your skills as a writer by consistently writing for your blog and reviewing feedback left by viewers every now and then.

  1. Look at This as a Business

Some freelancers tend to fail because they are unable to view what they are doing as a serious business. They just look at it as a hobby that they get paid for. While that sounds like the ideal job, it doesn’t work.

You will only be able to land clients and deals if you picture this as a business. Unless you value the work that you do for others, no clients will see any value for the work you’ve put out so far.

  1. Have a Marketing Plan

Having a marketing plan for any business improves how you can meet the demands of your audience. This works for freelance writers as well. With a marketing plan, you can ensure that your freelance writing business becomes sustainable. You can start marketing yourself by connecting with businesses on social media platforms, commenting on blog posts of websites that you wish to write for and having your own writing website.

  1. Make Pitches

Pitching your services to clients is a great way to achieve success as a freelance writer. While your services are definitely unique, there are millions of others with the same unique services that are getting themselves out there and connecting with clients.

Start pitching yourself to companies at least 5 or 10 times a day. Be active on job portals like Jobcompass.net and start sending personalized pitches for work. While you may not get answers immediately after pitching, don’t let that deter you from your goal. Pitch to other clients and companies until you get a call or an email back from someone. Don’t give up!

  1. Start Networking With Other Freelancers

Networking with other freelancers is a great way to build yourself and your business. While competition is painful, you don’t need to take it personally. Get to know about other freelancers and see how they can help you and vice versa.

  1. Set Goals for Yourself

Goal setting is a great way to climb up the ladder. Start setting goals about where you intend to go with this career, how much you want to earn, where you will get your clients from and what you are going to do to grow your business.

  1. Don’t Bite Off More Than You Can Chew

It’s great to be getting a lot of business but when you have an overload of work, it can take a toll on you for the worse. Try to manage your time effectively to complete all your assignments on time. Otherwise, be communicative and tell your clients that this is all you can take for the time being and that you will take up more once the current assignments are finished.

  1. Be Flexible

It isn’t wrong to have a niche subject that you excel in. However, that should not keep you from writing about other subjects. Taking on a variety of writing subjects does not just establish your skills as writer, but also adds to your skills and knowledge of your craft, giving you a huge range of work for your portfolio.

  1. Improve Your Proofreading

Spelling and grammatical errors are a huge no-no for any writer. Start proofreading your work after you finish writing to remove any and all errors to make your content excellent. If you’re a beginner, try using Grammarly alongside proofreading the articles yourself.

  1. Take an Online Course

Taking an online course for writing is one of the best things you can do for your career as a freelance writer. Not only do you learn about how to become a better freelance writer, you also save yourself the trouble of making some of the mistakes that many aspiring writers have made.

These are some important tips to keep in mind when embarking on your journey as a freelance writer.
