Applications deadline: 28th May 2020

The Birr Writer’s Residency offers four writers an opportunity to retreat to this wonderful inspiring town of Birr, Co. Offaly. The residency, located in Brendan House, Birr, offers professional writers, accommodation and workspace for a one-week residency. The purpose of the residency is to provide an opportunity for artists to focus on a writing project (current or new) in an environment which support and values high professional artistic development. The residency is open to professional writers of any genre, e.g. literary fiction, poetry, playwrights, journalism or travel writing.

These residencies are of course subject to change, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In these unprecedented and uncertain times we realise that many writers are unable to commit to a writers residency. With this in mind we have extended our closing date and rescheduled our residencies for the latter half of 2020 with the optimism that restrictions will have hopefully been lifted and we will once again be able to travel.

Brendan House is a period guest house, located in the heart of the heritage town of Birr, Co. Offaly. The adjoining working arts studio (Tin Jug Studio) is a local hub for artists gathering, workshop and talks.

The residency award offers up to four writers one week’s (7 days and 6 nights), bed and breakfast accommodation in one of the period rooms of the guest house, including two evening suppers. WiFi internet connection is available throughout the house. Writers can work in their rooms (a small writing desk is available) or may prefer to work in the artist studio if available. The local library is also only a short walk from the Tin Jug Studio.
