Deadline for submissions extended: Monday 26th October 2020

David Higham Associates is one of the world’s leading literary agencies. Established in 1935, we represent an outstanding range of writers of commercial and literary fiction and non-fiction, in all media and languages, and are the leading agency for children’s authors and illustrators.

In 2018, DHA launched a series of Open Days aiming to demystify the industry and connect with writers from under-represented backgrounds. This January, we are delighted to be building on previous DHA Open Days with our next DHA New Writers’ Open Week for adult and children’s fiction!

Following the success of the last-minute shift to online events for our Virtual Open Day earlier this year, we will be hosting the event series digitally again. We wanted to find an advantage in the fact our events for writers have to be virtual for now, and so will be opening them up to much higher numbers and to authors writing in English outside the UK.

We are thrilled to be inviting all applicants to a series of events this Autumn aiming to demystify the industry, including advice on writing submission letters, a look at the role of the agent, as well as the work of translation and film & TV rights teams. Twenty writers will then be selected to attend our DHA New Writers’ Open Week in January 2021, which will feature further exclusive talks from agents, authors and editors, and include an in-depth 1-1 feedback session on their submitted work with a DHA agent.

Applications are now open! We are pleased to be inviting both adult and children’s fiction entries, and welcome applications from the following: LGBTQ+ writers, writers of colour, writers from working-class backgrounds, writers from ethnic, cultural and religious minorities and writers with a disability. Entries must be in English and will be accepted from anywhere in the world, with the exceptions of North America, Australia and New Zealand (on the basis that there are thriving publishing and agenting communities in those territories). Writers should be un-agented.

We are not aiming to advise authors writing poetry, plays, non-fiction or screenwriting at this event.

To apply, writers will need to submit the following HERE:

– The first three chapters of their work
– A 1-2 page synopsis
– A completed application form

The deadline for submissions is Monday 12th October 2020 and the 20 selected writers will be informed by Wednesday 16th December. The Autumn events being hosted for all will take place once submissions close in mid-October, dates to be confirmed.
