Much of the advice I share here is focused on how we, as authors, can help ourselves in various ways. But it’s also important to reach out to our fellow authors and support them, too.

Now, I’m a big believer in self-care; if you don’t look after yourself first, you’re no use to anyone. But we’re a community of artists, and no-one understands the stress and hardship of writing better than other authors. We are uniquely placed to tap into our own experiences and networks of friends and contacts to help a fellow author out.

Here are just a few ways to pay it forward and lend a hand.

1: How to Support an Author’s New Book – Remember that, though you’re a writer, when it comes to other people’s books, you are first and foremost a reader. Don’t be too quick to discount these simple ways you can show your support.

2: The Ugly Truth of Publishing and How Best to Support Writers – Kristen Lamb lays down some hard truths about how an author’s success is influenced and determined. Keep this in mind, not only for fellow authors, but for yourself, as well.

3: 10 Ways Authors Can Help Each Other With Book Marketing – Build Book Buzz narrows in on specific ways authors can support each other.

4: Simple Ways to Support Your Fellow Indie Author – Karen Banes gives a wealth of simple and easy ways authors can support each other, along with links to useful resources and the basic thing we all need to understand: That our fellow authors are not our competition.

That’s all for this week. Good luck, and remember to help an author out.

Paul Anthony Shortt believes in magic and monsters; in ghosts and fairies, the creatures that lurk under the bed and inside the closet. The things that live in the dark, and the heroes who stand against them. Above all, he believes that stories have the power to change the world, and the most important stories are the ones which show that monsters can be beaten.
Paul's work includes the Memory Wars Trilogy and the Lady Raven Series. His short fiction has appeared in the Amazon #1 bestselling anthology, Sojourn Volume 2.
