New Literary Agency for Crime Writers | Resources | Getting Published | Submission Opportunities

Vanessa O'Loughlin

Writing crime? This could be the agency for you!

Phoenix Literary UK (Phoenix Lit) was set up by Rhian Davies to provide a range of services and, under its ‘Agency’ arm specifically, to specialise in crime and thriller fiction for the international market.  With an international business background and following three years as a judge for the CWA’s John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger, Rhian decided to change direction making her passion her business.

Phoenix Lit does not subscribe to the theory that the traditional publishing industry is taking its last breaths following the creation of the ereader and the ebook.  Being new, Phoenix Lit aims to be flexible in the changing market in order to take full advantage of opportunities.

Phoenix Lit seeks exceptional writing from new and distinctive voices.

Phoenix Lit is looking for high-end quality commercial fiction within the crime and thriller genre.  In respect of historical novels within the genre, please note that for us this covers the period 1910 to 1980 only.

Specifically, please note we will not consider the following:

  • urban fantasy, science fiction and related, either on their own or in crossover
  • novels set in the future.

We do not handle non-fiction, poetry, plays, screenplays or film scripts.

We are particularly interested in finding:

  • excellent new female authors
  • psychological thrillers and suspense novels.

Phoenix Lit accepts submissions in electronic format only at this time.

Submissions fulfilling the following criteria should be sent to submissions dot phoenixlituk at gmail dot com.  Submissions are to be made on an exclusive basis only.

Submissions – Stage 1

Initially, we require only a ‘pitch’/’query’ letter outlining the theme of the work and its style, plus details of the author’s writing experience and any life experience relevant to the plot of the work.  The subject line of the email should contain only the words ‘Stage 1 Submission’.  We prefer the letter to be within the body of text of the email.  If this proves of interest and we will then reply indicating a move to ‘Stage 2′.  Due to volumes, we aim to respond to all ‘Stage 1’ emails within two weeks.  Before submitting, please ensure your work falls within the scope to be found on our what we are looking for page.
