Submissions Call: Profiles Journal | Resources | Getting Published | Submission Opportunities

Submissions deadline: 4th June 2024

Profiles is an independent literary and vis-arts journal dedicated to character studies and portraiture.

It is a print journal published in Dublin, Ireland. We feature work by writers and artists living in Ireland and abroad.

The submissions window for Issue #3 is open until Tuesday June 4th 2024.

Profiles welcomes character-driven fiction and non-fiction — both original works and works in translation — under 5,000 words.

We’re interested in publishing character studies. We love writing that channels the author’s insatiable curiosity about other people (or their talent for self-reflection), is empathetic without bordering on apologia, and shows human nature as it is, not necessarily as it should be.

We also publish visual art — see here for more information.

To get a better sense of what we’ve published in the past and what we’d like to see more of, you can pick up a previous issue from our online shop or from one of our stockists across the island of Ireland.

Submissions guidelines

What to submit

➢ Profiles is interested in publishing character-driven writing. We love writing that channels the author’s insatiable curiosity about other people (or their talent for self-reflection), is empathetic without bordering on apologia, and shows human nature as it is, not necessarily as it should be. To get a better sense of what we publish, pick up one of our previous issues online or from one of our stockists.
➢ We accept fiction and non-fiction pieces. Poetry is not considered at this time.
➢ Translations into English are welcome, but please see the terms and conditions
below for more information on our policy regarding translated submissions.
➢ Extracts from longer works are accepted, but they must be able to stand alone.
➢ Submissions must be under 5,000 words. There is no minimum word count.
➢ We’re interested in featuring work by writers living both in Ireland and abroad.
➢ Please submit only one piece per reading period.

Terms & conditions

➢ Simultaneous submissions are encouraged, but please let us know as soon as your piece is accepted elsewhere.
➢ All submissions must be previously unpublished online or in print.
➢ Copyright is the property of the author.
➢ Profiles is a print-first journal; however, some pieces chosen for publication in print may also be made available on our website at a later date. We will always ask for a writer’s permission before publishing their work online.
➢ Pieces with a journalistic or academic slant will be fact-checked and writers are asked to cite reputable sources for any claims that cannot be easily verified with a Google search. Submissions making potentially defamatory claims will be rejected.
➢ Submissions of translations are welcome but cannot be published without permission from the publisher of the original text. Profiles is happy to assist translators in acquiring the foreign rights to a text if necessary, but please keep in mind we cannot guarantee acceptance of any piece without securing the rights first. This is not applicable to translations of works in the public domain.
➢ We ask that, where possible, translators include a copy of the source text in the same document as their translation.
➢ We are not interested in publishing pieces that have been generated, in whole or in part, by artificial intelligence.
➢ If your work was featured in our most recent issue, we ask that you wait another year before submitting again.

How to submit

➢ Please submit through our dedicated form. Submissions are not accepted via email.
➢ Remove your name and any other identifying details from the document. Our initial review of each submission is blind, meaning an editor first reads your work without seeing your name or bio. This is to reduce the risk of bias against submitters on the basis of their backgrounds or previous publishing credits.
➢ Spelling and grammar are not of concern to the editors at the reading stage and no submission will be rejected on the basis of language use alone. All pieces selected to appear in Profiles will undergo copy-editing prior to publication to conform to the spelling conventions of the Oxford English Dictionary and our own house style guide (except where dialogue or narration intentionally uses non-standard English).

profiles After submission

➢ We aim to respond to all submissions within two months of the deadline.
➢ Please note that we cannot provide feedback on unsuccessful submissions.
➢ Thanks to the support of Dublin City Council and Dublin UNESCO City of Literature, we are able to offer payment to all authors and translators whose work appears in the issue. Click here to see our up-to-date payment policy.
