Submissions deadline: 1st April 2021
The Momentist is a new online magazine of literature and art, publishing translated and original-language fiction and poetry, essays, interviews, and visual art. We’re open for submissions for our second issue until April 1st.
We take our title from something once said by Harold Brodkey, that “the reader in his or her life has more access to the real than the author does, which counters the author’s more practiced access to language. This is Momentism.” Our interest is in writing that takes up this relationship (which is to say writing that risks it; that, among other things, hazards being misunderstood). This doesn’t necessarily only mean formally innovative writing, and we will consider work in traditional styles equally alongside more experimental writing. You can take a look at what we’ve already published at themomentist.org/issue-one/.
We are open to writers, artists, and translators from anywhere in the world. Submissions should be previously unpublished. We are happy to consider simultaneous submissions.
This is a free magazine, and we’re working to secure financing for future issues to pay writers and artists (and understand this process won’t be viable for all until we do), but for now the majority of submissions are unpaid except for a small honorarium for translators.
We’re looking for:
- short fiction up to 7,000 words (delighted to consider excerpts from works in progress);
- poetry submissions (no more than four poems at a time);
- art/lit critical essays (we’re open to pitches if you’ve an idea to work out);
- original artwork;
- translation proposals (fiction, non-fic, and poetry).
For the second issue we’re particularly interested in essay/criticism and translation proposal, though we will consider submissions of all kinds.
