Superlative – The Literary Journal, and was established in 2020. We publish short stories (up to 5,000 words) and poetry.
The journal is edited by Ross Turner, Gemma Mainwaring, Daniel Chesmore, Holly Joyce and Varvara Lois, illustrated by Orlaith Stratford, and marketed by Hannah Darby.
We publish quality, innovative work by emerging short story writers and poets, and our main aim is to nurture emerging talent and newly-established writers; we take great pride in literary loyalty, and endeavour to give our authors the best possible experience, promoting them as widely and fully as we are able.
Superlative Literary Journal: Submission Opportunities
There are 5 types of submission (all accepted via the Submittable platform):
- Open short story and poetry submissions (these are read and published year-round, and there is no set number – it is based entirely on the quality of submissions).
- Open creative non-fiction and personal essay submissions (these are read and published year-round, and there is no set number – it is based entirely on the quality of submissions).
- Monthly short story and poetry feature competitions (these are singular poems and short stories, published every month – one winner is chosen each month in each category).
- Quarterly micro-fiction competitions (one winner chosen per quarter who receives publication, prize money, promotion etc.)
- Annual short story and poetry competition (these are the big annual competitions, with a single winner in each category, but also runners-up, shortlists, and longlists).
All contributors and winners are paid: £100 for open submissions. £100 for monthly winners. £150 for quarterly winners. And £500 for the annual winners – with the hopes of this stretching into the £1,000’s in future years. A small submission fee per category covers the journal’s running costs. Any additional funds leftover from submission fees are reinvested into prize funds. Wherever possible, we do offer reduced or free submission entries.
