During the lockdown, my wife and I turned our thoughts to the Christmas 2021 window display in our shop in York. Christmas is York is a fabulous time and we always make a huge effort to dress the window appropriately, particularly as we are the first shop visitors and locals encounter when entering through one of the Bars.
My wife began creating a woodland village scene, made from recycled materials and sticks and leaves littering the floor of the wood where we often walk with our dog. Several houses were constructed and the village began to take shape. We populated the village with felted characters that we sell as decorations in the shop – mice, hedgehogs, elves among many others. Very soon it became clear that the characters leant themselves to a story and I began writing this in January.
The story developed and we decided that it could be presented as an illustrated Christmas book. We constructed the village on our kitchen table and took many photographs of different houses and characters. Some of these then were used to illustrate the story. We also filmed a short animation, which will be released on social media the day before we launch the shop window display at the end of October. I then set about the task of designing the book, learning several self-publishing techniques along the way! The book Santa’s Trousers is now available on Amazon, published under my writing name, Jon Markes, as well as on our shop’s website:
