I self-published my first book in December 2020, Powered to Fall, Empowered to Rise, and used Amazon to sell the ebook and paperback version. After encountering some issues in selling the paperback version, my book went out of stock on Amazon and remained that way despite several attempts to resolve the issue.

This minor obstacle in the self-publishing process presented me with an opportunity to set up my own marketplace, buythebook.ie so that I could sell paperback copies directly to my readers and offer them an option for a signed copy. In taking things into my own hands and creating my own independent marketplace, I was no longer relying on Amazon to have my book available in paperback.

Since setting up this marketplace, I realised that I could use it to help other authors who are also looking to sell their paperback books directly to their readers. I came to realise that other self-published authors might also encounter the same issues I had. In joining buythebook.ie, authors can avoid setting up individual websites, and instead come together and become a self-published seller’s marketplace and community.

Shortly after setting up buythebook.ie, I was watching RTE news and they reported on a lady, Brigid Kavanagh who had just published her first book at 95 years of age. I contacted her son Declan, to see if I could help him sell her book through buythebook.ie. Declan had been selling in local shops and on Facebook and dealing individually with orders and payments. Declan agreed to come on board and he now receives the book orders directly by email and the payment goes straight into his bank account.

The working relationship with Declan has become much bigger than just selling books. We speak on a regular basis, support each other through our self-publishing and self-promoting journey and we are both extremely passionate to spread the word about our books. In coming together, we can exchange information and share our contacts in local bookshops, compare stamp prices and even where to buy envelopes! It has been an absolute pleasure working with Declan and to see Brigid’s book sell into the USA from the website. This has felt like a huge milestone for both of us.

Even though I have never meet Declan or Brigid, I feel that we have connected and formed our own small community in the big book selling world. We can celebrate our own personal achievements and in coming together we combine our publicity and publishing efforts. I am passionate about bringing other self-published Irish authors on board to come on this journey with us.

I believe that by forming an author community and in coming together that we can share ideas, experiences, and most of all our combined publicity. I believe that we can become known as the marketplace to buy and support Irish authors who have not been able to get a publishing deal and I believe that we can create opportunities by selling our books in Ireland and further afield. At a time when many Irish people cannot make the journey home, it will be even more important that they can connect to a piece of Ireland with our books and our writings.

After going through the process, I am now passionate to help other writers who are either close to or finished the self-publishing process and to offer them a simple solution for selling their books online directly to their readers. As orders come in, each author will receive notification for their orders and be responsible for shipping and signing their books directly to their readers. Our marketplace does not get involved in holding stock or fulfilling orders.

On the first Monday of each month each member will receive an order statement and the amount due to them for their book sales (minus the Stripe transaction fee). Two days later, the amount owing will be transferred to their nominated bank accounts. We will organise a monthly call to discuss any questions that members have.

The benefits of coming on board to buythebook.ie is to:

  • Bring self-published authors together to one online marketplace to sell their books
  • Give responsibility to each author for the shipping and fulfilment of their orders
  • Get enhanced media and social media coverage by using one platform
  • Establish connections to independent book shops for buying self-published books
  • Offer a low-cost solution to authors for marketing and selling self-published books

As we grow the buythebook.ie community, we can grow the platform to become an ongoing support network for new and upcoming Irish authors. We can create online conversations and share our experiences and advice along the way, and we can become more than just another site that sells books. We can become the voice for Irish self-published authors at home and away.

I look forward to hearing from you

Although only a short period of time has elapsed, we haven’t looked back since becoming a member. The book has had sales to north and south Kerry and to North and South America, and even as far as Australia, in the last few weeks. We have also been able to bounce ideas off against each other, with mutual sharing of contacts being of enormous benefit. We are certainly learning as we go along and improving the ways in which the potential buyer becomes the proud owner of any of the books on buythebook”. Declan Kavanagh

About Powered to Fall, Empowered to Rise:

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at the age of 30. At the same time I was looking to start a new life in Australia and had just met Des (my fiancé) while working at an Irish bar.

Des stood by me through this illness and supported me in ways I could have never imagined with his love. After having to cancel our wedding in 2018 and give up work, we finally found our happy place in 2020.

The love that Des showed me during this time and the illness inspired me to write a book so that I could help others who are also going through a difficult time. The book writes about the lessons I learnt in my own life on health, wealth, love and happiness.

It is my hope that this book will help others and inspire others that love always shines through no matter how dark our days are. This book has been written from my heart to yours.
