Competition: First Novel Prize 2018

A literary contest open to previously unpublished and independently published novelists.

First Prize: £1000

Second Prize: £250

Third Prize: £100

Have you written a novel that is yet to be published? Then this is the competition for you.

In its third consecutive year, the First Novel Prize aims to discover a powerful new voice in fiction writing, across the English language world.

The First Novel Prize will open for entries again in 2018, with a First, Second and Third Prize up for grabs. If your novel is over 50,000 words and of an adult genre, then we would love to read it. You can submit your entry here:

Entries will open from the 1st of February 2018.

The entry process is as follows:

1) Pay the £25 competition entry fee. (After making the payment, please wait to be automatically redirected to our website. Only if your browser does not automatically redirect you back to our website, please make sure you click the link ‘Return to Daniel Goldsmith Associates’ and you will be redirected to a page where you can upload your entry.)

2) Upload your manuscript onto our website, making sure that your details are on the title page of your manuscript, followed by the synopsis and the novel within the same document.

3) You will receive an automatic confirmation email from us and a receipt for your payment. We will now be in possession of your submission. Once checked, it will be forwarded on to the judges. If we need anything else, we will be in touch. Read full Terms and Conditions.

If you wish to enter by post, please send your manuscript to First Novel Prize, C/O Daniel Goldsmith Associates Ltd, Gridiron Building, One Pancras Square, London, N1C 4AG including a covering letter, the synopsis and a cheque written to Daniel Goldsmith Associates Ltd for the £25 entry fee.

Terms and Conditions

In order to be considered, all entries must be received before 23:59 on the 31/5/2018.
To enter, please send your full manuscript with your contact details and the synopsis attached within the same document.
All entries should have a cover page with the entrant’s name, address and email/telephone number.
Only completed novels over 50,000 words will be accepted, there is no maximum number of words.
You must be satisfied that your novel is complete; there will be no later opportunity to submit a different version.
All adult genres welcome, unfortunately we are unable to accept Children’s or Young Adult novels.
Non-fiction, novellas and short stories will not be accepted.
Self-published/independently published manuscripts are welcome. Self-published/independently published means the author owns the rights to the work in full.
Manuscripts should be: double-spaced on A4 layout, single-sided, with pages numbered, the entrant’s name and the title of the novel on every page.
The novels should be the entrant’s original work.
Novels should be written in English originally, we are unable to accept translations.
Winners will be contacted no later than the 31st of August 2018 via telephone/e-mail.
By submitting your manuscript you are agreeing for Daniel Goldsmith Associates Ltd to keep a record of your e-mail address for marketing purposes only. This information will only be used by Daniel Goldsmith Associates Ltd and will not be shared with any third parties.
Entrants must not be related to Daniel Goldsmith Associates Ltd through employment.
Winners must be able to make themselves available for marketing purposes (by providing a photo and written response).
Copyright of any novel remains with the author, however Daniel Goldsmith Associates Ltd has the right to publish fragments from winning manuscripts as quotes for marketing purposes.
