Competition: The Plaza Sudden Fiction Prize

Plaza Sudden Fiction Prize

By Writing.ie

Competition deadline: 30th November 2022

The Plaza Prizes are judged by the biggest names in the creative industries.

We are scouting the globe for real talents. It’s our job to promote our winning writers and artists, give them a platform to connect with readers.

Sudden Fiction could be defined as bits and pieces. Short, sharp, affecting stories, longer than Flash Fiction. The Han Chinese call this form: Zhang yan, literally ‘Smoke-long’, because the reading is over in the time it takes to smoke a cigarette.

Emotional economy. Brevity. Elisions. The balance between what is said and what is not said is hugely significant. Prompting what goes on in your readers’ imaginations, how they fill in the gaps, join the dots, this is quite the puzzle to piece together.

1,500 word limit. Judged by Tara Laskowski. Tara is an Agatha-winning American Thriller writer, and flash fiction expert, a former editor of the journal, Smoke Long.

It’s £1,000 to the winner, £300 to the runner-up and £100 to third place. The top 10 get published in our inaugural anthology, launched in August 2023.

The Plaza Prizes are NEW international literary, art and dramatic competitions, based in the UK. We have Toby Litt, Sam Blake, Roland Watson-Grant, Tara Laskowski, Richard Skinner, Maya C Popa, Simon Trewin, Anthony Joseph, Joel Haikali, Zaffar Kuinal, Ben Clarke, and many more writers, screenwriters, dramatists, and artists, slated to talent spot in 20 competitions over 2022-23, with over £20,000 in prizes on offer.
