Wexford Literary Festival 2017 runs from Friday, May 19 to Sunday, May 21 in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, the heart of Ireland’s South-East. With a packed programme of special guests, workshops and literary prizes, Wexford Literary Festival is fast becoming one of the highlights of the literary calendar.
The Wexford Literary Festival is holding three writing competitions: The Colm Tóibín International Short Story Award, The Wexford Literary Festival International Poetry Award, and The Wexford Literary Festival One-Act Play Competition.
Colm Tóibín International Short Story Award
Wexford Literary Festival welcomes entries to its annual international Colm Tóibín Short Story Award. Writers are asked to consider the guidelines below before submitting their entries. Entry fee: €10
Terms and Conditions
PLEASE STATE IN THE SUBJECT HEADER: SHORT STORY SUBMISSION
- This is an open competition for a short story, with no restriction on the subject matter
- The competition is open to people of 18 years and older
- Only one entry per person is permitted
- Competition is open internationally
- 1st Prize is €1,000, 2nd Prize €500, 3rd Prize €300
- Entries must be in English
- Entries must be between 1,800 and 2,000 words in length. Entries outside this word count will not be permitted and will be automatically rejected
- Entries must be the original work of the author and must not have been previously published either in writing or electronically. Entries which have received awards in other competitions are also ineligible
- Only short stories will be accepted. Poetry and prose entries are inadmissible
- The author’s name and details should only appear on the accompanying e-mail. Please ensure that the title is clearly marked at the top of the entry and each page thereafter. The author’s name must NOT appear on the entry submitted, only on the e-mail accompanying the piece
- Entries will be accepted until April 1, 2017. Entries received after this date will not be considered
- The judges’ decision is final and Wexford Literary Festival will not enter into correspondence concerning the judging or merits awarded. The onus is on the author to ensure that their entry complies with the rules of the competition
- Entries should be submitted electronically only. Hard copies will not be admissible
- Shortlisted writers will be invited to attend the award ceremony on Sunday, May 21, 2017, however all expenses incurred will be the writer’s own
- While copyright of the short story will remain with the author, Wexford Literary Festival reserves the right to arrange the first publication and broadcast of the selected works. The right to use the stories to further publicise this award is also retained by Wexford Literary Festival. The winning author will agree to have their photograph taken and used for publicity purposes by Wexford Literary Festival
- The entry fee of 10 euro must be paid via our online payment system

Wexford Literary Festival International Poetry Award
Wexford Literary Festival is delighted to welcome entries to the Wexford Literary Festival International Poetry Award. Poets are invited to submit up to three poems, up to a maximum of 40 lines, for consideration. The €250 prize, sponsored by Baker Tilly Hughes Blake, will be awarded at this year’s festival. Entry fee: €10
Terms and Conditions
- There is no restriction on subject matter
- The competition is open to people of 18 years and older
- Up to three poems per person is permitted
- Competition is open internationally
- 1st Prize is €250 plus the Wexford Literary Festival International Poetry crystal award, 2nd €200 and 3rd €100
- Entries can be up to and including 40 lines in length
- Entries must be the original work of the author and must not have been previously published either in writing or electronically. Entries which have received awards in other competitions are also ineligible

Wexford Literary Festival One-Act Play Competition
Wexford Literary Festival is delighted to welcome entries to its inaugural One-Act Play Competition. Playwrights are invited to submit plays of up to 15 minutes in length and four finalists will have their pieces performed by Enniscorthy Drama Group at this year’s festival, with a prize of €300 euro going to the overall winner. Entry fee: €10
Terms and Conditions
Playwrights are asked to read the guidelines below before submitting their plays for consideration.
- Each play should have a running time of up to and including 15 minutes. As a guide, using the format below, 1 page equals 1 minute of performance time
- Scripts should be clearly formatted: 12pt, double-spaced, Times New Roman
- Each script should be numbered, with the title of the play at the top of each page
- The playwright’s name should not appear on the script
- The script should not have been performed previously, or be scheduled for performance
- The play should not be an excerpt from a longer work
- The play should require no more than four actors
- Plays should be sent as doc (Word) or PDF
- The play should have minimal sound, tech, set requirements
- We do not accept adaptations
- Closing date for entries is April 1, 2017
- Each submission must be accompanied by a 10euro entry fee paid via our online booking system
