Hotel Doolin has announced details of the Doolin Writers Competition 2016. Entries are now being invited for short stories and poems. Dave Lordan will judge the poetry competition and Anthony Glavin will judge the Short Story with €1000 and publication in Banshee Literary Journal up for grabs for the overall winner of each category.
Hotel Doolin has confirmed the weekend of the 4th-6th March for the 4th annual Doolin Writers’ Weekend, which will again play host to some of the country’s leading writers. Joseph O’Connor will launch this year’s Writers’ Weekend with the final line-up of participating poets and writers will to be announced in early January.
Competition Rules
Entry implies acceptance of all rules; failure to comply with all rules results in disqualification. Submissions accepted from poets/writers of any nationality, from any country.
Entrants must be aged over 18 years .
No poet/writer may win more than one prize. The judges’ decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.
Poems must be in English, must each be no longer than 40 lines (that does not include the title)
- Must show title & poem only,
- Must not show poet’s name or any other identifying marks on submitted poems.
- Must be the original work of the entrant.
- Entries may be on any theme must not have been previously broadcast or published (in print or online).
- There is no limit on number of poems submitted.
- No alterations accepted after submission.
- Copyright remains with the author subject to Doolin Writers’ Weekend having the right to first publication;
- Fees: All entries must be accompanied by submission fees of €10 for 1st poem & €5 thereafter
- Cheque/Money-Order: payable to Hotel Doolin

Short stories must be in English,
- Must each be between 1000-3000 words (excluding the title) and must show title & story only. The entry must not show the writer’s name or any other identifying marks.
- Must be double spaced. must be the original work of the entrant.
- Must not have been previously broadcast or published (in print or online).
- There is no limit on the number of stories submitted

- Postal entries should be sent to Doolin Short Story/Poetry Competition, Hotel Doolin, Doolin, Co. Clare (please ensure to distinguish in the title line of the address which category it is, short story or poetry)
8 shortlisted names in each category will be announced on Doolin Writers’ Facebook page at no less than 2 weeks prior to Doolin Writers’ Weekend. Shortlisted authors will be contacted by email.
2 winners in each category will be announced on the opening night of Doolin Writers’ Weekend. Winners will read their poem and excerpt from their story on Saturday night of the Doolin Writers’ Weekend.
Accommodation and meals will be provide for winners and runners up on the Friday & Saturday night.

- Ensure your poem(s) or flash fiction story/stories are in Word (.doc) or PDF format only
- Pay the appropriate fee via PayPal (see below)
- Make a note of your PayPal Receipt Number and the Amount Paid
- Construct an email as follows:
In the email Subject, please put “Doolin Short Story/Poem Competition” In the Body of the email, please include:- Your Name, Address and Phone number
- A List of the Titles
- The Amount Paid and your PayPal Receipt Number

Attach your entries as Word (.doc) or PDF documents

Unfortunately we are unable to confirm each individual entrant.
Note: If the Entrant’s name differs from the PayPal account holder’s name, please make this clear in your entry email.
Poems and Stories must be entered separately.
The PayPal option allows for up to 10 poems or 5 stories. You may enter additional poems or stories in a new email entry.
Currency conversion for the purpose of this competition (subject to change): 10.00 Euro = £8.00 Sterling = US$14.00 *Banshee Lit are under no obligation to publish winning story/poem but will meet with the winning authors and give editorial feedback.
