Competitions deadline: 30th September 2019

Mslexia Magazine fiction competitions are now open for submissions. There are three categories: for full-length novels, short stories and flash fiction. Whether you write long or short, there’s bound to be a category to suit you.

Our prizes – for both the winners and finalists – can be life-changing. As well as a generous cash prize pot, we are offering agent representation, manuscript feedback, career mentoring, a writing retreat, pitching workshop, personal introductions to agents and editors – plus publication in Mslexia magazine.

Novel (prize £5,000)
Please send up to 5,000 words, which should be the beginning of your novel for adult or young adult readers. This prize has been created specifically to promote the work of women who are (as yet) unpublished as novelists.
Judges: Bestselling novelist Louise Doughty, BBC Radio producer Nicola Holloway, literary agent Charlotte Robertson
Additional prizes: Five finalists will be invited to a pitching and networking event with agents and editors, and will receive manuscript feedback from The Literary Consultancy. As well as a £5,000 cash prize, the winner will also be offered a chance to be represented by Charlotte Robertson (who achieved publishing deals for three previous finalists in this competition).
Entry fee: £25

Short story (1st prize £3,000)
Please send unpublished short fiction up to 3,000 words in length in any style or genre for adult or young adult readers. Unpublished and published women are eligible to enter.
Judge: Award-winning short story writer and novelist Irenosen Okojie
Additional prizes: The winner and three finalists will be published in Mslexia magazine. Three finalists will each receive £100. As well as a £3,000 cash prize, the winner will be offered mentoring by an editor at Virago Press and a week’s writing retreat at the inspirational Moniack Mhor centre in the Scottish Highlands.
Entry fee: £10

Flash Fiction (1st prize £500)
Please send unpublished very short fiction up to 300 words (excluding the title) in any style or genre for adult or young adult readers. Unpublished and published women are eligible to enter.
Judge: Renowned flash fiction author and tutor Kathy Fish
Additional prizes: The winning entry and three finalists will be published in Mslexia magazine. Three finalists will receive £50.
Entry fee: £5

Please submit your work typed, double-spaced on A4 pages, single sided, with pages numbered.
Your entry will be judged anonymously, so do not put your name on the text pages of your entry.
Add a separate cover page with your contact details, plus the title(s) of the work you are submitting and the word count(s).
Once submitted, no alterations may be made to your entry.
Please note that the above formatting / cover page instructions are for ease of administration and we prefer you to follow them. However, if you forget anything or put details (titles, author name, word- or line-counts) in the wrong place, your entry will not be disqualified. We will only disqualify entries if they are over the word or line limit.
Your entry will not be returned, so please keep a copy. If you require confirmation of receipt of a postal entry, please enclose an SAE labelled ‘Acknowledgement’.

We do not send copies of the results to entrants, but results are published in Mslexia magazine and listed on the Mslexia website.
The winners and finalists of our three fiction competitions will be announced in Mslexia magazine as follows: Short Story and Flash Fiction in the March 2020 edition; Adult Novel in the June 2020 edition.
