The Bridport Prize is one of the most prestigious awards in the literary world. Applications are open for Poetry, Short Story and Flash Fiction.

Poetry

All we ask is that you please keep poems to 42 lines, max. You can, of course, write less. In addition to the prize money, our top three winning poems are automatically entered into the Forward Prize For Poetry’s competition, with the chance to win a further £1000.

When it comes to the Bridport Prize competition, you can write about absolutely anything but whatever your rhyme or reason, we want to read your poetry.

First prize: £5,000. One of the largest poetry prizes, the winning poem also features in our anthology, a chance to see your words on the printed page. That’s not all. It opens up further opportunities where your work needs to have been published. You will also be invited to take part in our awards celebration, receive feedback from the judges and our professional partners. Finally, we will champion you not only as one of our winners but as our alumni, part of the Bridport Prize family.

Second prize: £1,000. Your poem features in the Bridport Prize anthology, so you will see your words on the page forever more. It also means you are published and can pursue other opportunities. We hope you’ll join us for the awards celebration and enjoy the recognition of your success. It is a big deal.

Third prize: £500. Your poem is included in our anthology where you’ll see your words finally within the pages of a book. Being published now gives you access to other opportunities. There’s the chance to join our awards celebration and appreciate the fact your hard work has been recognised.

Short Story

Gail Honeyman was shortlisted in our competition and went on to write Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, winning the Costa debut novel award. Our winning and highly commended UK based writers are entered into the BBC short story competition. That’s not all, literary agent A.M. Heath reads all the shortlist and considers representation. Long story short? You are 5,000 words away from success.

First prize: £5,000. One of the largest short story prizes, the winning story features in our anthology, so you will see your words in print, maybe for the first time. That’s not all. It opens up further opportunities where your story needs to have been published. You will be invited to our awards celebration and get insightful feedback from the judges and our professional partners. Finally, we will champion you not only as our winner but always as part of the Bridport Prize family.

Second prize: £1,000. Your story features in the Bridport Prize anthology, so you will see your words on the page forever more. It also means you are officially published and can pursue other opportunities. We hope you’ll join us for the awards celebration and recognition of your success.

Third prize: £500. Your short story is included in our anthology where you’ll see your words finally within the pages of a book. Being published now gives you access to other opportunities. Join our awards celebration and breathe in how your hard work is out there for all to see.

Flash Fiction

It may be the sprint of creative writing but that doesn’t mean you can rush the creative process. Take us somewhere fast then let your story marinate in the reader’s mind. Make every one of your 250 words count. There is no minimum number of words, just like there is no limit to your imagination. They say lightning doesn’t strike twice but we want to feel the electricity in your story right from the beginning through to the very end.

First prize: £1,000. One of the most generous flash fiction prizes, the winning story also features in our anthology, a chance to see your words on the printed page. That’s not all. It opens up further opportunities where your work needs to have been published. You will also be invited to take part in our awards celebration, receive feedback from the judges and our professional partners. Finally, we will champion you not only as one of our winners but part of the Bridport Prize family.

Bridport

Second prize: £500. Your flash fiction features in the Bridport Prize anthology – your words on the printed page. It means you are published and can pursue other opportunities. Our awards celebration is also recognition of your success and we hope all of this inspires you to pursue your writing dreams.

Third prize: £250. Your flash fiction is included in the Bridport Prize anthology, which gives you access to other opportunities as you are now published. There’s the chance to join our awards celebration, hear from our partners and take in the fact your writing is recognised, valued and out there.
