Wild Atlantic Words Short Story Competition

A short story competition to be judged by award-winning writers, Thomas Morris and Wendy Erskine is part of this year’s Wild Atlantic Words Festival. The closing date for entries is Friday, August 30th at 5pm. Entry forms, along with a full list of competition rules and regulations, are available on the festival’s website, www.wildatlanticwords.ie. The short story competition is sponsored by Bridge St bar, with a first prize of €500, and second prize, €250. A reading and prize-giving ceremony with Thomas Morris will take place on October 12th in the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar.

Founded in 2016, the Wild Atlantic Words literary festival takes place every October in Castlebar. This year’s festival runs from October 10th – 13th. The festival aims to celebrate the literary heritage of our rugged coastline over a weekend of readings, recitals, debates and reflection, while also acknowledging our new and emerging writers. Previous guests have included former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, plus a host of acclaimed national and international authors, including Sally Rooney, Mike McCormack, Donal Ryan, Billy Keane, Pat McCabe, Mary Kennedy, Anne Chambers and many, many more.

Terms and Conditions

The competition is open to people over 18 years of age who are Irish or resident in Ireland.

Only one entry per person is allowed.

Entries must be the original work of the author and not previously broadcast or published.

Stories must be less than 3,000 words.

The author’s name and contact details should only appear on the accompanying entry form and NOT on the short story manuscript. A 9-digit order reference number will be issued on receipt of the €10 entry fee and this reference number should appear on the top of the short story manuscript, preceding the story title.

Entries should be typed and supplied in PDF format (A4 sheet, 12pt font size, double line spacing).

Entries by email only to wildatlanticwords@gmail.com, accompanied by entry form and entry fee order reference number. Entry forms and entry fee payment link are available on www.wildatlanticwords.ie.

Entries will be accepted by email until 5pm on the closing date, 30th August 2019. Winners will be announced prior to the Wild Atlantic Words festival. Winners will be invited to attend the prize-giving event on 12th October 2019 in The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar.

1st prize is €500, 2nd prize is €250.

By submitting an entry, the author agrees that the entry may be read at the prize-giving event during the festival.

The judges’ decision is final and Wild Atlantic Words will not enter into any correspondence concerning any entry.
