Bestselling crime writer Sam Blake talks to debut crime authors Awais Khan, Nadine Matheson and Rachel Ryan about what it took to get them from emerging to published, why crime fiction, and any tips for new writers hoping to break out in crime fiction and beyond.

Sam Blake – Writer, member of SoA Management Committee
Sam Blake is a British crime writer based just outside Dublin in Ireland. The Dark Room, a country house mystery set in West Cork, is her latest chart topper, out now. Sam Blake is the pen name of Vanessa Fox O’Loughlin, the founder of the multi-award-winning writing resources website Writing.ie, The Inkwell Group publishing consultancy, and Ireland’s Murder One International Crime Writing Festival. Vanessa Fox O’Loughlin is a member of the SoA’s Management Committee.

Awais Khan – Writer
Awais Khan is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and Durham University, and studied creative writing with Faber Academy. He is the author of the critically acclaimed In the Company of Strangers and the upcoming novel No Honour. Awais is also the Founding Director of The Writing Institute and teaches creative writing to aspiring writers around the world.

Nadine Matheson – Writer
Nadine Matheson was born and lives in London. Her debut crime novel, The Jigsaw Man, was published in February 2021. She practices as a criminal defence solicitor. In 2016, she won the City University Crime Writing Competition and completed the Creative Writing MA at City University of London with Distinction in 2018.

Rachel Ryan – Writer
Rachel Ryan was born in Dublin in 1991 and spent most of her childhood with her nose in a book. She always knew that she wanted to write books of her own. Throughout her twenties, she worked various day jobs in retail and childcare while writing stories at night. After many years and many rejections, she was signed by star literary agent Marianne Gunn O’Connor. Her best-selling debut novel, Hidden Lies, a psychological thriller about a young boy with an imaginary friend, was published by Simon & Schuster in Canada and the US, and by Piatkus (Little, Brown) in the UK. Rachel still lives in Dublin and now writes full-time.
