Event description

Ask The Agent | 11.00-12.00

Literary Agents Simon Trewin, Sara O’Keefe and Ian Drury in conversation with author Sam Blake aka Vanessa Fox O’Loughlin. How do you approach an agent, what should you send them and why do you need one? With plenty of time for your questions, if you are about to submit, this is a panel you cannot miss.

First Page Pitch | 12.00-13.00

Send in a two line/50 word pitch describing your book and the first 500 words of your novel to patricia_looney@corkcity.ie and the expert booklovers at Cork City Libraries will chose 10 for the authors to read out loud (or if you’re shy, Sam Blake will read them) for feedback from our agents. It is incredibly useful to hear pitches and the openings of books and what the agents think of them – tune in to perfect your own approach, find out what works and what doesn’t!

Making it Happen with Children’s Author Olivia Hope | 13.30-14.30

Olivia Hope came to a book clinic that Vanessa/Sam Blake ran as part of Cork World Festival a few years ago. In her ten minutes, Olivia made Vanessa cry with a gorgeous picture book story about a robin, and took her first step on the road to success. Vanessa took her book to the London Book Fair where she was meeting the head of the Darley Andersen Literary Agency’s Children’s Division Clare Wallace, and Clare loved it. Clare now represents Olivia who has three books on the way with Bloomsbury and many more in the pipeline. You’ll soon be seeing Olivia Hope’s name everywhere!

Vanessa will find out what’s happened on Olivia’s journey and her tips for children’s writers. Olivia now works for The Inkwell Group critiquing picture books and teaches creative writing. This will be an hour packed with information with lots of time for your questions – and we’ll be discussing all areas of children’s writing as Olivia has experience across the board.

Inside Children’s Books with Literary Agent Polly Nolan | 14.30-15.30

If you’re writing for children understanding the genre is crucial, Polly Nolan has risen to the top in the book world and is now an agent who specialises in Children’s fiction, find out exactly what you need to do to attract an agent and publisher in this world.
